Need marking tool
I have been using a lead pencil for marking the design I am quilting on a quilt and hoping it will wash out. I have tried several quilt marking pencils but it seems I can never get the mark dark enough to see well while quilting. Am I ruining my quilt with the pencil? Any suggestions on a GOOD marker?
Blessings,
Sandy

Re: Need marking tool
Had the same problems with lead, and the pencil type markers I just don't like. I like the felt tip markers. They now make them in a fine point that disappears when you iron it. Ask at a quilt shop.

Re: Need marking tool
I had been reading that you could use crayola wash out markers so I got a pack at Walmart. They were cheap, $4 for a whole bunch of different colors. I tested them on a scrap and it did wash out but it took some scrubbing. I have a scrappy quilt that the dog sleeps on. I am going to make some marks on it and put it in the washer to make sure it comes out. I have problems too with the markers made for quilting not being dark enough.

Re: Need marking tool
I use a chalk marker. It doesn't give the finest lines, but the chalk inserts in the cartridge come in several different colors. I have lead marks all over one of my first quilts and its been washed a zillion times.

Re: Need marking tool
They have some great FriXion pens here on M*QC that I purchased and love. Mark all over and it irons out. For really dark fabrics I use a chalk pen.

Re: Need marking tool
I have been using a dual pen for marking...one side is "Mark -B-Gone" and the other side is Disappearing Ink...I have used both side with no problem....I think it is made by Clover but I could be wrong...I bought it at a LQS up in Green Bay when I was visiting my daughter!

Re: Need marking tool
Fyi, I just received the Nancy's Notions catalog in the mail today. There is some marking pencil remover in there that might be worth a shot if you have trouble removing the markings. I don't know anything about it, but might be worth it!

Re: Need marking tool
Thanks ladies. I will not be using the lead pencil any more. I will look for some of your suggestions in the near future. I want to get this quilt done by Easter as it is a Birthday present for my oldest daughter and they are coming then. I don't have a lot of sewing time every week so really need to keep at it when I can. Guess I need to make a trip to town and visit some of the quilt stores.

Re: Need marking tool
I use the Frixion pens on a light fabric. I use a sliver of soap on a dark fabric (I have heard the Frixion will 'bleach' the darker fabrics). You can buy the Frixion pens at most any office supply house. (Sorry M*QC.)

Re: Need marking tool
Try sew line. They come in various colors and you can get them on line. I use them and the marks come out with washing.
