Perle 8 is a thread and John James 10 is a needle.

This site will help you understand the difference in needles.

Like Ginny said, Perle 8 is a type of thread used for handquilting. I believe it's a little thicker.
I'm not sure what "the manger things" are that you are talking about.
For hand quilting all you need is your thread, needle and project. Some people like using a hoop or frame, but some like to just make sure it's pinned or basted well and not use any hoop or frame. Needle size is a preference too.
Blondie does a lot of handquilting so she will definitely be able to give you some pointers.
    Good luck and post pics!

With perle cotton your stitches will be a little longer and alot heavier. It makes beautiful quilts, especially if you use contrasting thread. You need to check out Blondie's albums, she has some stunning quilts there, that she has hand quilted with Perle 8. She is a true artist with it.

One thing you might want to think of is that your finger on the bottom of the quilt where you feel for the needle may get sore at first and then develop a callous...i cut the sticky part of a bandaid off and stick it to my finger..I can feel the needle but losing the kind of ugly callous. I've tried liquid bandaid but didn't care for that.Any thing thicker and I can't feel the needle
    Good luck...you'll get addicted

If you are going to use perle 8 thread you will need embroidery needles or Chenille # 9 needles...there is one tutorial on perle cotton stitching on you tube so you can't miss it! It is the one I learned from and Blondie said I was doing good with it....used it a little on the CoC quilts along with machine stitching the first couple of quilts...now I am doing my first lap quilt all with the perle cotton and am loving it.......you will too once you master the rocking motion, that was the hardest part for me and sometimes I notice I get lazy and have to give myself the "pep" talk! It is very soothing and relaxing once you master it!
