    Wink Fabric question

My daughter and I began machine quilting about a year ago so all of this is still new to me. My question is I noticed "backing fabric" listed and it states 108", help a newbie out what exactly would I receive if I got this fabric? Thanks in advance.

You would receive fabric that is 108" wide x 36" long for every yard you order. Some quilters like a whole piece of fabric for their quilt backs ( not me!). I have purchased at my LQS Mod a backing fabric when the had it on sale because I loved the color and it was cheaper to buy the backing than the same print in the regular quilt fabric size. I use it for piecing. It is called backing fabric just because it is larger in size.

I like the wide fabric when I put my quilt on the frame. But I do piece them when I have to, the selection of the wide fabrics is limited so if I'm looking for a certain color or print I may have to buy the 44" fabric.

Thanks for the feed back! My daughter and I have made a few quilts over the past year-each one has been a learning experience. We taught ourselves thru reading quilting books and trial and error, we have pieced the backs together as per instructions in the very first book we read, it works great. Just this morning I noticed the "backing fabric" section at MSQC site and thought geeze have we been missing out on something that's out there in the quilting world.

I am using 108 inch wide fabric on the king size quilt I am making now. I like it because it cuts down on time if you don't have to piece the back. I got 3 yards which made it 108 inches square and it was only $42. If I had bought enough fabric yardage to do this size it would have been a lot more.

I use the 108" wide backing on everything. I know that 2 1/2 yards will get everything up to a queen and 3 1/2 yards will do a king size. Then I save what I cut off and use it either as binding or as backings or backgrounds in wall hangings or what ever I need it in.
I love it. Sometimes it is cheaper than buying yardage and having to piece it. As a matter of fact I have a 3 yard piece of 108" wide that I am using as a background for my Circular Bargello whenever I get it finished. That one is a one day down the road finishing.

Your quilt is very pretty, I usually use 108" muslin for my backs....by Legacy Studio at Joann's. I buy it with a 50% off coupon, it is expensive but good quality and I use the left overs in my quilts....I have quite a few yards of it in stock here at home!

I used to use piece yardage for my backs but have found it to be way too expensive. I have purchased cotton flat sheets for the backing because you can usually get them on sale. I do find that here in Ontario, Canada the quilts shops are way over priced for fabrics. We usually pay $15. per meter for fabrics. We have Fabricland, but they are very limited on what they have. I can never get coordinating fabrics once you find a fabric that you like. So its not very quilting friendly. I made a queen size quilt when I first got back into quilting I guess about 4 yrs ago. From a quilt shop, the total amount for the quilt fabric was $470.00, then it cost me $300.00 to have it quilted. So its crazy what we pay up here. That's why now I purchase everything online because it is cheaper even paying the shipping from the US. So you really have to do your homework for cost. Anyway I've rambled enough. Your quilt is very nice, I love the bit of red you used for the inner border.

Wow! Listening to your prices, I will stay where I am. I was anyways, lol. We sell 108" quilt backings for 7.99/yd. It would be impossible to quilt if I had to pay such $$ as some of you. I will truly appreciate my world.
