Quilting one side of a quilt?
You know all those little mug rugs? Well for a couple of swaps I'm making some but I want to quilt only one side. Without saying too much :) I don't want the other side to have what's on the front as far as quilting. Do I put something under the batting? Paper?
Re: Quilting one side of a quilt?
On Jenny's tote tutorial she doesn't put anything on the back of it because the lining doesn't get quilted. So I think I would just quilt the top and batting.
Re: Quilting one side of a quilt?
Good question! I'm planning to try my hand at some as well - they seem to sew up so quickly and are just flippin' adorable. I'll be back to see what others think.

I agree. If you only want the top quilted, then just quilt the top and batting, then put the back on and bind it.
Re: Quilting one side of a quilt?
Some machines don't handle the batting without fabric that well. If your machine is persnickety you could put a piece of muslin as the backing and quilt it like a regular quilt. Then add your coordinated backing. If your machine handles the batting alone under the top, then just quilt it.
Re: Quilting one side of a quilt?
I've done a few just top and batting was fine..
Re: Quilting one side of a quilt?
Okay, thanks! I have everything cut out and didn't want to experiment to much.
Re: Quilting one side of a quilt?
Amazingly, you can feed your batting and top through your machine without much problem. Do that, then attach the backing.
Re: Quilting one side of a quilt?
Ahhhhhhhhh, me? I definitely would try to use something on the back - perhaps tissue paper or water soluble stabilizer, or a cut-away or tear-away stabilizer. I am thinking of the lint that may come off from the batting. Don't forget - my machine is in the shop for a very thorough cleaning!!!
Re: Quilting one side of a quilt?
What type of batting are you going to use? I have quilted just the top and batting before but I use warm and natural. I think you will have to use a batting that is tightly woven with a scrim. The thin loose polys I think would get caught on the feed dogs and possibly the foot to.
Re: Quilting one side of a quilt?
I'm thinking two potential issues: lint and getting caught on the "teeth" of the feed dogs. I'd use something, maybe muslin or even a sheet of parchment paper or something, just to make sure your batting isn't snagged and your machine doesn't get too linty :D
Re: Quilting one side of a quilt?
I looked into it some more and decided to use some tissue paper. Thanks for all the help!
