Re: what to buy?
I usually buy pre cut because i cant match fabrics to save my life and i would buy yardage of a line of fabric but they dont go onsale as often as i find pre cuts on sale. Plus im horrable at math so end up with either not enough or too much waste. Msqc has great deals and so does green fairy quilts. If i buy online i buy from those two places.

I buy both yardage and precuts, more yardage then precuts. I have a hard time matching fabrics, but I also don't have the money to purchase just precuts. I buy my precuts here on MSQC because I do not have a local quilt shop that has precuts cheaper.

Re: what to buy?
Mostly I buy yardage and cut myself. I do buy pre-cuts occasionally if looking to make something specific out of a certain line, and if the DD strikes my fancy.

I do both but only buy pre cuts with a coupon or on sale.

Re: what to buy?
I buy precuts usually from MSQC when there is a deal that looks good, but that I end up buying yardage to go with them. At the local quilt shop I buy yardage. Sometimes you just dont want the scrappy look, so yardage works better for those quilts.

Re: what to buy?
I buy yardage. I know that a charm pack or a layer cake is a mixture of a particular line and if I really like it and can find it marked down...way down, I may buy it, but that doesnt happen often. I just think they are so expensive. When I think of a layer cake being 3 yards of fabric and a charm pack being less than a yard, I cannot justify paying all that money. I can get Kona fabric with sales and coupons so much cheaper. I bought quality fabrics for the quilt I am making now and only spent around $25 because I wait for sales and use coupons. If you go on ebay, there are many charm packs and layer cakes(Moda) and sometimes you can get them at a really great price. Any charm packs that I have now came from eBay.
Sorry didn't mean to ramble.

Re: what to buy?
I usually buy yardage because its less expensive.
A jelly roll is approx 3 yards of fabric and can be pretty pricy regular price (I saw them at a quilt shop in New Mexico for $40.50). M*QC has them for $10.95 to $39.95 but you have to pay attention to the size, some only come with 15 strips.
I can get six 1/2 yard cuts of fabric for 24.00, not have to pay shipping, i can use a coupon, I can walk out the door of my local store and go home and sew right away and not have to wait on it.

Re: what to buy?
I mostly buy yardage for all the reasons others have already mentioned....but I also love the walking thru and having a fabric jump at me and then finding the perfect combinations to go with it. I guess I like the "mix and match" theory.
