I usually buy pre cut because i cant match fabrics to save my life and i would buy yardage of a line of fabric but they dont go onsale as often as i find pre cuts on sale. Plus im horrable at math so end up with either not enough or too much waste. Msqc has great deals and so does green fairy quilts. If i buy online i buy from those two places.
I buy both yardage and precuts, more yardage then precuts. I have a hard time matching fabrics, but I also don't have the money to purchase just precuts. I buy my precuts here on MSQC because I do not have a local quilt shop that has precuts cheaper.
Mostly I buy yardage and cut myself. I do buy pre-cuts occasionally if looking to make something specific out of a certain line, and if the DD strikes my fancy.
Ditto with Marilyn....that's twice tonight....are we sisters do you think?
I do both but only buy pre cuts with a coupon or on sale.
I buy precuts usually from MSQC when there is a deal that looks good, but that I end up buying yardage to go with them. At the local quilt shop I buy yardage. Sometimes you just dont want the scrappy look, so yardage works better for those quilts.
I buy yardage. I know that a charm pack or a layer cake is a mixture of a particular line and if I really like it and can find it marked down...way down, I may buy it, but that doesnt happen often. I just think they are so expensive. When I think of a layer cake being 3 yards of fabric and a charm pack being less than a yard, I cannot justify paying all that money. I can get Kona fabric with sales and coupons so much cheaper. I bought quality fabrics for the quilt I am making now and only spent around $25 because I wait for sales and use coupons. If you go on ebay, there are many charm packs and layer cakes(Moda) and sometimes you can get them at a really great price. Any charm packs that I have now came from eBay.
Sorry didn't mean to ramble.
I usually buy yardage because its less expensive.
A jelly roll is approx 3 yards of fabric and can be pretty pricy regular price (I saw them at a quilt shop in New Mexico for $40.50). M*QC has them for $10.95 to $39.95 but you have to pay attention to the size, some only come with 15 strips.
I can get six 1/2 yard cuts of fabric for 24.00, not have to pay shipping, i can use a coupon, I can walk out the door of my local store and go home and sew right away and not have to wait on it.
I mostly buy yardage for all the reasons others have already mentioned....but I also love the walking thru and having a fabric jump at me and then finding the perfect combinations to go with it. I guess I like the "mix and match" theory.
I lean towards precuts, but it all depends on the project I am working on. Pre-cuts for me makes my life easier because of the situation I am in (cutting things in yardage is and can be difficult for me a lot of times). Although I have to say that a few of the ladies at Joann are so kind that they are willing to charge me for a single cut, but cut the same fabric in smaller increments (and yes in the size that would work for me as far as what project I'm working on - ie. if I need or know that pieces I need, need to be 10" then the smallest I'd have them cut is about a couple inches bigger)... Okay I'm done gabbing my mouth now. LOL
I like to buy yardage mostly. On occasion, I will buy pre cuts if there is a really good deal. Otherwise, when I go to the fabric store, part of the fun is searching for my fabrics and laying them out. I like to come home and take pictures of what I've bought and I love touching the fabric, and putting it away. It's a process for me as it is for many.
I mostly buy yardage. I do buy some precuts but usually only from MSQC when they are the deal of the day.
I LOVE matching fabrics, but the precuts appeal to me because I want a little bit of it all. So, I do both. I have purchased several precuts and then matching yardage to finish and back the quilt. I also like to just start from scratch matching fabrics up. In general, it is cheaper to buy yardage, unless you want some of each of the line, then the precut is your best deal. Best place to buy? Missouri Star!
I buy mostly yardage although I did just order a "layer cake" from the deal of the day here because it looked interesting. I'm not even sure what I'll make with it yet, I just thought it looked cool. I can see how using jelly rolls could certainly save some time but since I have a quilting partner (my wife) she cuts while I sew and it goes pretty fast.
We buy primarily from our local quilting store because the ladies who work there have been so friendly and helpful as we began our quilting adventures, it is close and convenient, they have a wonderful selection, and I try to support local/small businesses when possible. I have also ordered and been quite satisfied with the stuff from Missouri Star too! They are also helpful with all those amazing youtube videos and this forum full of helpful people. If I'm just fooling around and not making something 'heirloom quality' I will sometimes got to the walmart not too far from here that still sells fabric because they are cheap and I don't feel bad buying a few extra yards just to play with and test out ideas. I wouldn't use that fabric for a quilt I hoped to pass down in the family though.
I buy both. I buy precuts from MSQC or my LQS.
I'm thinking of taking some of the yardage I have and making some of my own. I have the AccuQuilt Go so I can do the 5" charms on that. I could do the 2 1/2" strips too but I think I want to learn to use my shape cute so I'll make the strips with that.
I mostly buy yardage because I am a poor girl and can't afford the price of the pre-cuts usually.
wow you guys are so helpful! thanks for all your comments...this really helps what way my mind goes...I think I'll buy yardage...matching fabrics together sounds fun :)
I'm kind of torn about this issue. I am a novice quilter, and the pre-cuts are WAY easier to work with, since I tend to cut things pretty wonky. Also, it's nice to be able to find fabrics that already go together. That said, the cost of someone else matching fabrics and cutting them out for me is often prohibitive, so I do try to wait until I can find a REALLY good sale/coupons, etc.
TBH, the only time I get a jelly roll, honey bun, layer cake, charm pack, or turnover...is when I can find a ridiculously good deal.
Other wise, for the $ you would save ($ per yardage or percentage of yardage vs actual yardage price)....I'll spend the time and cut my own.
I buy a lot of precuts for the variety. I don't have the luxury of a quilt shop here. One of my favorite online places is crazy quilt girl fabric shop. She sells mainly moda precuts and its the cheapest I've found.... Well unless its the DD. I buy from here but if I can't find yardage here I shop at river city quilts.
I usually buy yardage but have bought the DD more often than I should. I have a friend who cuts a 2½" strip from all yardage she brings home. She then can make her own jelly rolls an/or great scrap quilts.
I learned to quilt making templates and adding the seam allowance to them. I did not like that part at all! My youngest sister introduced to rotary cutting so I don't really mind cutting yardage
What I learned from my Grandmother: Born 1899 D: 1968. She hand sewed many quilts thru her life..and I followed her around during my Summer Vacation begging her to let me Sew Too.
1. Save all those cotton dresses, shirts and skirts. Cut the largest pieces from them that you can. Save all the buttons and zippers from each item. (I lost alot of my cotton skirts at Grammy's)
2. Only Buy fabric from the bolt... Cotton is the best, but a little blend of poly doesn't hurt. 1/2 yard to 1 yard at a time. Sale bins have the perfect amounts for the money!! So Check out the Clearance Box! (we knew how to get out of the dog house with Grammy!!)
3. Cut out ONE block's fabric requiments and make a TEST block. (these can become a Sampler Quilt when you get enough) Alot of my blocks were in her Sampler.
4. Keep your Templates away from Children's greasey hands!! Don't Ask
5. Large Flat Sheets make the best (budget wise) backings.. She always wanted Flat Sheets for her Birthday and Christmas!!! And we thought she was silly!
6. Never...ever let anyone use your SCISSORS.. My worst experience with Grammy was over her scissors..

What I'm trying to tell you is that you can and should feel free to USE whatever Cloth you want, find, make, snitch or buy in your quilting. It is a personal decision... so have fun with it as you consider your budget limitations.
wow thanks these are some awesome rules to live buy...I just talked to my mom and she said she has a bunch of old clothes I can go through so now I'm really curious on what she has that I can create with....but what do you mean by a test block...or a sampler quilt?
I mostly use yardage, especially if I am making a quilt with a limited number of colors in it. I do use some precuts. They are great because you have a lot of different fabrics that go together. I think MSQC has the largest selection of precuts.
Also- Cutting yardage precisely with scissors = not easy. Cutting yardage precisely with a rotary cutter, ruler, and cutting mat = not terribly difficult.
