My First Applique - and I have questions!
Attachment 37299
Scraps from Go Pink and Christmas combined for my first applique wall hanging. The hearts are pretty stiff because I used something I'll call "two-sided sticky iron-on stuff" I found in my cabinet. I'm going to practice my FMQ again, but I don't know if I should quilt over the hearts or just around them. Any experienced advise will be very welcome!

SO CUTE!
Have you outlined the edges with a satin stitch? I can't really tell by photo. If you have, impeccable job!
I'm trying to hone that skill down, myself....
Re: My First Applique - and I have questions!
That is so cute that I would be afraid to touch it! If it's a wall hanging maybe just stitch around all the lines? I'ts super cute!
Re: My First Applique - and I have questions!
Yes, I did. In fact, that's why I started out with such large hearts -- by the time I got to the 4 small ones, I had it figured out.
Re: My First Applique - and I have questions!
Very pretty! You will be ready for February! Some of that sticky iron on stuff can be very stiff......I try to use the lightest weight that I can find. I think I would just quilt around the hearts.....too much stitching might take away from the design. If it is a wall hanging, it won't need much quilting.
Re: My First Applique - and I have questions!
What a beautiful little quilt! I'd love to know where you got the pattern - I want to make one like it! It is really cute.
I'm a bit afraid of machine applique and want to start out with something not too complex. You've done a very good job with this project. Your fabrics are perfect for the hearts and the layout is so interesting. Talent, my dear! You've got talent!
Re: My First Applique - and I have questions!
Thanks for the compliments Cyndi. Actually, I was going to do Jenny's tutorial for a heart quilt, but didn't feel like piecing - so I just made a large heart and did red/pink opposites on the borders. when I ran out of large fabric pieces, I did the four small center ones. Other than that, there was no real planning - it just kind of happened, and turned out much larger than anticipated.
Re: My First Applique - and I have questions!
I adore this!!! You did a wonderful job with the applique! This is just so sweet!! Nice job!
Re: My First Applique - and I have questions!
I love it, but agree, you should use the lightest weight stuff you can find.....I don't use fusible as I want to be able to stitch through it and I may not be able to with the fusible..(hand stitching)....also you can use used dryer sheets for backing and apply with a little basting spray or lapel glue....MSQC sells it! I tend to use the featherweight interfacing...it is pretty sheer for an interfacing and doesn't interfere with sewing...and it is fairly inexpensive! Hope this helps you!
Re: My First Applique - and I have questions!
lots of great info...
The hearts are fantastic are you sure its your 1st?
Re: My First Applique - and I have questions!
Not my first quilt -- just my first applique.:)
Re: My First Applique - and I have questions!
Thanks - Good to know on the dryer sheets. Now that you mention it, I'm sure I can't stitch through what I used. I think I'm gonna do Xs and Ox on the sashings.
Re: My First Applique - and I have questions!
I've been thinking about trying my hand at applique as well. Beautiful quilt.
Re: My First Applique - and I have questions!
I use Heat N Bond lite for applique but when you cut out the piece of HNB before you peel one side off and iron it to the back side of the fabric, cut the bulk of the center of the piece out so you just have an outline of the shape rather than a solid shape to iron on the fabric. That way the center of the applique piece isn't stiff/bulky so if you want to fmq over it, it's not too thick. Your quilt is beautiful.
