    Default Memory quilts??

    Here another question......

I've got my nails done today!! I went to a new salon and this lady who did my nails was really nice and we had a great time, and I went home with beautiful new nails........(in Holland a nail studio is like a beautysalon, most at home in a spear room or remodeld garage)
So brings me to my question.
We were talking and getting to know each other, she told me her husband died 2 1/2 years ago in a motor crash....she was left with 4 kids, now she is ready to clean out his clothes.....when she learned I made quilts she asked me if I knew what a memory quilt was, she wanted quilts for all her 4 kids.......she wanted me to think about it if I could make those and what the price should be......

Never done something like that, no idea what to ask for it, and what good patterns are.......she has 1 girl and 3 boys.
I would love to take on a project like that, but I did not say yes right away.

Does any of you have pictures and or tips for me??

    Thanks in advance!

I know someone just posted a picture of a very nice memory quilt made from a loved one's clothing. I have never done it. I think you could make it as simple as you wanted, unless there are just lots and lots of different fabrics that you need to incorporate.

I was at a fabric store in Oregon last summer, and a lady was shopping for some backing for a military memory quilt. Seems that all members of her family were in the military (all in different branches), so she did a combination of pictures on fabric with pieces of their military uniforms and the colors of the service they were in. It was done mostly with squares, but it really was cool the way she put it together. Wish she had let me (or I had thought about it) take a picture of it, because it was really well done.

I have no idea what to charge. It depends on the complexity of the design and the fabrics, some are more difficult to work with.

    Be warned. I am BORED.
    This could be dangerous.

When you get cold just go stand in the corner.
    They are usually 90 degrees.

A giraffe's coffee would be cold by the time it reached the bottom of his throat.
Ever think about that? No? You only think about yourself??

Klaisen, I have been thinking on this and I think a quilt similar to the COC quilts would work out very nice, especially as she wants so many...give it some thought.....maybe a small square of clothing set on a larger square of plain fabric...I always use muslin and once those squares are made you could sash or do what ever you wanted with the squares....just an idea!

You might print off some pictures and show them to your nail tech to see if she has any ideas.

A lot depends on what type of shirts they are. If they are plaid or flannel, then a more rustic pattern would work (log cabin, 9-patch, Stars, etc). If they are more like shirting, they work well in stripes, or tube quilts, or many of the patterns in the tutorial section. If you have to supplement, I would supplement with solids to feature Dad's shirts.

I think you need to find out what kind of fabrics you would be working with...are they sturdy work uniforms, dress shirts, etc . You can use that information to help you decide what pattern to choose. I think you should keep the pattern simple. If the man wore a lot of colored shirts, a bow tie quilt would be nice.

You need to know a little about the person whose clothes you will be using. I read in a magazine once that a woman made four quilts (one for each of her daughters) from her late husband's clothes. The man had the habit of carrying coins in his pockets and would jingle the coins. On the back of each of the quilts she sewed a pocket with some coins in each one to remind the daughters of their Dad. You will uncover something special you will be able to work into the quilts...good luck, Klasien! Let me know how it goes. Hugs, Barb

I used to have one - I think my mom has it now
    it was so neat!
it was a crazy quilt style with big pieces of fabric (lap size) from many old shirts and dresses.
it was pieced like a crazy quilt but without any of the emboidery - that would have covered up the fabrics!
    Happy Quilting!

If it is with different fabrics, maybe a rag quilt might be an idea.....
