Default FMQ Problems Making Me Crazy HELP!!!!!!!!!

I did FMQ on my MIL's lap quilt and had no machine problems at all. Now I am trying to FMQ a batik table runner with Kona solid backing. I finally got started after fighting with machine on practice piece of same fabrics. Thought I had everything set & started the FMQ. Every now and then it would skip stitches and then after a short while the needle broke. Here is what I have used and what is happening.........Does anyone have suggestions?

    Stitch length set on zero
    Reduced tension
    Darning plate in place.....older machine
Tried Microtex sharp 70/10 needle .........recommended for batiks...............thread would break
Tried quilting needle 75/11..........that's the one that broke while doing FMQ
Switched quilting needle 90/14 ........still having skipped stitches

Throughout the whole process I have had trouble getting the needle to pick up bobbin thread on my first stitch....this happened with every needle. Can't figure out if it's the needle, the thread or the machine or me!!!!!!!!!
Help me before I throw the machine out of the window!!!!!!

My machine is SO needle picky I named her Princess.

I have to use topstitch size 14 or 16 for FMQ. Sharps are not strong enough and they bend and break. The last time I quilted with a sharp, it jammed sideways into my bobbin case before it broke and I got a "motor overload" warning from my machine!

I HAVE to use topstitch needles on everything when I quilt. I have never in my life had such a picky machine, but I LOVE what she can do so I'll put up with her needle demands!

My favorite thread hands down for FMQ is silk #100. That gets expensive, so I use other threads as well. I MUCH prefer thinner threads, cotton or poly #50 to the heavier weight #40 machine quilting threads.

I'm using the same darning foot that Leah Day uses with the clear plastic part.....I made the adjustments that she did. But I think I moved the rubber band a little more before I started on this project. Do you think I have the bar on that foot pulled up too much?
