    Default How on EARTH

do you Quilt large quilts on a home machine? I just bought a Janome 3160 QDC because at the moment that's all my meagre budget would allow. I was drooling over the $5,000 deep throated Quilting machine but that's just way too rich for my blood.

I really, really want to make a king sized quilt for my bed but I have no idea how I will ever quilt it. I won't be doing it until I have learned to free-form quilt but I'm still very concerned that I won't be able to fit it through my machine. Are there special tips or techniques? I guess I need to hit Google again!

Send it to MSQC! That's my advice for quilting a king size quilt on a domestic machine! I'm only trying to save your sanity.

Check out Leah Day's tutorials I think she calls her method the squish, squish, flatten method (or something technical like that lol)

Whoops, hit submit before I was finished lol I was going to add that you should also know that quilting a king sized quilt on a home machine is probably going to try every last bit of patience you can muster and will require LOTS of squishing and LOTS of flattening lol On some machines it is possible (so I've been told, never tried it) but if your throat space is REALLY small then become friends with someone who owns a long arm machine

LOL! I just saw you answer NYS in her thread about a Janome model other than mine and realized you answered me there without even seeing this! This makes me sad. :'( I really, really wanted to make quilts for my home but sending them off for quilting by M*QC is not really an option...my budget just won't allow it even as affordable as they are.

I have a quilt frame and pantograph. I split the quilt into quarters, and will join them when finished. I think you could do that, too, if quilting on a home machine. It is a big process. It is a nice option to have it quilted elsewhere, but not one that is always available due to cost constraints,

I have read in a couple of threads about your quilt that you are doing in quarters, but I didn't realize you meant literally.... I'm very fascinated.... How will you put them together after they have been quilted? This could be a very good option for large quilts and home machines.

    Our worlds collide, Wendy!
Craftsy.com has an on-line class By Ann Petersen, 'Quilting Big Projects on a Small Machine', for $39.99. That's my plan. And my instructor is confident we can get past this for now.
Even though it's been a year, I'm still not worthy of a jacked up machine. I have a track record of diving in to something, never to come back up to the top again. Gotta learn to walk, before you run....

I have never made a large quilt. If I tried to quilt one on my sewing machine.. I am sure all the members in Australia would here me cussing up a storm from way over here in Missouri....LOL. Twin/lap size is the biggest I will attempt on my machine.

How's your patience level? You are looking at LOTS of work but in my opinion, it is well worth it in the end if you can quilt your own!

Wendy, I have quilted a king size quilt on a portable machine, the Gem Gold; so it can be done....lots of patience and a glass of wine occasionally doesn't hurt either......my favorite is a shot of vodka in my coffee!
