I found another forum where they said three jelly rolls make a 92 x 106. I don't know how accurate that is. I guess it depends on a given pattern, but that sounds about right.

Summer in the Park was one of the first quilts I made when beginning my quilting. It certainly turns out wonderful. It isn't the easiest quilt to make because the blocks are sewn on the bias, and beginning quilters tend to stretch the bias sides when they sew their seams. I know I did. When I was finished with it, and tried to put on the borders, the edges were very stretched, and the borders won't lie flat. My quilt still isn't quilted because of this. I made a quilt to cover a daybed, so it is extra long but not that wide. I would think you would be able to make this quilt top for a queen bed with 2 jelly rolls (40 strips each), plus some yardage for borders. I cut my jelly roll strips from some fat quarters, plus I had some small jelly rolls, so I'm not sure how many actual regular size jelly rolls this would have taken. I've made other style quilts from jelly roll strips, and 2 jelly rolls made a top to cover a queen mattress, I had to add borders to make it wide enough to cover the mattress on the sides. If you want to be safe, you could use the estimates given by Joyce, and use three jelly rolls (120 strips).

Remember, every jelly roll manufacturer puts different number of strips in their jelly rolls. The most standard number of strips is 40, and most put 40 in their rolls, but some put less numbers in their rolls, so you need to think in terms of number of strips. 2 regular size jelly rolls would be about 80 strips, so make sure you have about that many to make this queen size quilt. Adding a 3rd jelly roll would make sure you had enough to cover it, without having to rely on borders to make your quilt cover the mattress sufficiently. Two manufacturers who usually have less strips in their jelly rolls are Riley Blake and some of the batik jelly roll makers--these are ones that MSQC carries. I've never seen a 40 strip jelly roll from big retail stores, such as Joann or Hancock, or Hobby Lobby. Theirs are usually 20, or even 10 strips, they'll seem cheaper because they have less strips in them.

Also, how big are you intending to have the quilt when you are finished? Are you just going to have it big enough to cover the mattress? Are you wanting it to cover the pillows? Do you want it to go down to the floor? If you want any of those configurations, you definitely would need 3 full size jelly rolls. I just make mine big enough to cover the mattress and not cover the pillows. My queen quilts end up being about 80 by 90. I make matching pillowcases for my bed, I like that look rather than a quilt over the pillows. Factor in that consideration when you are trying to decide how big to make the quilt.

    Hope this helps! Good luck.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Jean has some very good advice. I started out with a very small simple squares baby quilt back when I started quilting over 40 years ago. I still haven't made any real big quilts. But love making wall-hangings and baby quilts.

Good luck. Glad to have you with us.

From what I've read, Jean is our math quiz queen! Regarding Jelly Rolls--you can cut your own from yardage. It's just so much easier to buy a JR because it's already cut and the collection is together. Some shops don't put collections together--they shelve according to color.

Lori Ann - as you get your feet wet with quilting you will be pleased if you have this site bookmarked. The MODA site will answer many of your questions about yardage, sizes, etc. Enjoy. And welcome to the forum.

    This could be dangerous.
