I have fabric that I want to Fussy Cut (I think that's the term) 4 1/2" block. I bought a 6" square but it seems awkward to work with. Any suggestions?

I have a 8 1/2" square that has cut out in middle to make 4 1/2 " block. This one is made by June Tailor. perfect for fussy cutting 4 1/2" blocks.

Make a 4.5 inch template out of cardboard or template plastic (template plastic can be found in quilt shops--it's not hard acrylic like the templates you buy on MSQC -- it's a flimsy plastic like a milk carton -- you have to be careful not to shave pieces of your template off when you use template plastic).

get some type of clear tape. Static tape or glow tape is great for this, it comes in 1/4" wide rolls in neon colours. I think Omnigrid makes some. It has no adhesive on it. If not, use other tapes instead. Place a couple strips on your 6" square at the 4.5" lines or just beyond so you can see the lines. Place your ruler over the area you want to fussy cut and cut two sides, then turn the ruler around and cut the other 2 sides.

Omnigrid does make a 4-1/2" ruler. I got one in a set of rulers. If you have tons of squares to cut, it might be worthwhile to get the right size ruler. I think it would be very inexpensive, since it is small.
You can have a square of plexiglass cut at a local glass or hardware store for about $7 or less. I have done this a couple of times. You won't have any lines on it but you can always put them on with a Sharpie. If you are just wanting to fussy cut, this would be ideal for you. Cheaper than the fussy cut rulers out there and very convenient! I had one cut when I had 100 HST blocks to cut down to 2 1/2" square. Cost me 3 bucks and well worth the price. I just took a sharpie and drew the diagonal line on it so I could place it correctly on my HST blocks.
