E, that were a good idea! (Sorry about the Yorkshire accent)
I think I may try a variation, as none of the fabrics are plain, using equal numbers of light and dark squares for each 4 and the burgundy fabric with gold flowers for the centres - maybe I'll try to curve them like cathedral windows and hand sew the edges. The red fabric with script should be enough for a border and then I'll see what's left of the prints and join the pieces to make a long strip for the binding.
Which part of Yorkshire are you in? I have friends around the Huddersfield and Kirk Heaton area. (Only left the UK last October for our new life Down Under)
Made a practice 10 minute block with some spare charm squares I had left over from another project. Yes, it is much harder with smaller squares but I'm sure it would look better using 10" ones. It really did take less then 10 minutes and 3 seams!
How, where and when do you press it so the centre square (whichis double fabric and has a lot of hidden seams) lays nice and flat ready for rolling and stitching?
I know this example is very uneven but I wanted to see if I could understand the instructions - they always make it look so easy.

it is easier with the bigger block, but do another and i am sure it will lay flatter. Comes with practise. If mine is a little poofy I wack a load of spray starch on it press hard and its fine.
Press before you roll your sides. Oh and dont fanny about doing the rolled sides by hand. Throw a pin or two in and slide it into the machine. Sew slow and it will be canny. If you are still having trouble, spray starch you middle square before you start the block. So much is dependant on the fabric.
Have another bash at it.
