Someone on this forum must use one. I just traded in the Brother PQ1500S for one. I have a couple of questions.
Oiling?
The manual says once a day if you sew a lot. Other people have found once a week works. I oiled the 1500 roughly every 10 days, sewing maybe 3 or 4 hours a day for a couple of days. Took machine apart to fix a problem and there was oil everywhere. It had dripped out of the bottom of the 1500. We live in a dry climate - oil doesn't evaporate, but dust gets everywhere including in the oil. What's a good median for this machine?
Much more control over everything than I had with the Brother. Was pleased to find a generic all purpose foot on the machine although it wasn't listed. I'll mark it like a quilting foot at 1/4" intervals for turning. I did that with the Brother foot. It did a 1/4" seam far better than the quilting foot. I had bought extras for the 1500, and finding out that the Juki also uses the feet, bobbins and bobbin case is good.
The screw that holds the feet on is a good big one. I had trouble holding on to the screw for the Brother when putting on a walking foot. The machine is recessed into a Horn cabinet, so I couldn't face the screw. I'm not a contortionist.
I like the plate on the bottom that lets you clean or retrieve a dropped bobbin. I dropped one in the Brother and finally used a magnet to grab it. I prefer vertical bobbins. My Pfaff 2170 is a vertical, but it's in front, not the side.
Juki included a screwdriver that fits the screws on the needle plate. Even a stubby was too long for the Brother. Brother sewing machines usually have a round screwdriver that come with the set up, but that screwdriver doesn't fit the 1500.
I took the clips for the needle lifter off the table that comes with the machine. It was close to the setting of the Brother in the cabinet, so I shimmed the Juki enough to use the table as a surround. Will see how it works.
The Brother is a good machine, but mine just got a little too picky about thread used. I want to use what I want, not what the machine wants. All of my thread is "good" thread. The Brother was having a problem with Superior, Prescencia and Invisafil.
