Default New Member & New Quilter

Hi, my name is Debbie. I am a new member and a new quilter. I am 65 and retired. I am a mother of 3, grandmother of 8 and great grandmother of 1. I also have 3 grand puppys. I have always loved quilts. I have sewed since high school. When each of my 3 kids got married I made their wedding dresses. That was way too stressful. Now I am ready to do what I always wanted to do....learn to quilt. I haven't actually started my first quilt yet. Any suggestions on where to begin.? Thanks so much. I look forward to learning from all of you here.

Missouri Star has many wonderful tutorials that show you how to make amazing quilts but actually are easy to put together.

Jenny's tutorials are the best place to start! Then I would check out quilt in a day (Eleanor Burns) and then Bonnie Hunter (quiltville.com) They are all wonderful teachers with distinctly different styles. You may find you prefer one of them, or like me, embrace all three of their styles and more.

    Hello Debbie,

Welcome from Michigan! My first quilt I made was Yellow Brick Road. I purchased the pattern because it was suggested by my local quilt shop. Pattern had sizes from baby on up and made from fat quarters. It didn't involve too small of pieces, learned to rotary cut on smaller pieces than the full width of fabric, and matching seams was not involved and I could hide mistakes. The pattern does not call for an inner border but I put one in. Went together pretty quickly and I straight line quilted on my sewing machine New Member & New Quilter-image.jpg

Hello & welcome to the forum. I would suggest you take a beginner's class at your local quilt store, and then watch Jenny's tutorials & other internet sites. I think they will make more sense to you, if the basics are taught to you first. Good luck & most of all have fun! I forgot to add, my first class, we did the rail fence pattern. It was a wall hanging. Great one to begin with.

Welcome to the forum from Florida. And welcome to the wonderful (and addicting) world of quilting. I would start with a simple quilt (9 patch or maybe Jenny's tutorial on the double slice layer cake https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxC-0T5lXw4)

Thank you for your help. I will definitely check out all 3 teachers. Eleanor Burns I have watched on tv often, jenny I have checked out on u tube but bonnie hunter is new to me. I will check out her web site. This may sound dumb but I was not aware that there could be different styles of quilting. Thanks again

Welcome to the forum, I am new to quilting too, and I just jumped in with both feet. I tried teaching myself and while I have made plenty of mistakes I try to learn from each one. Everyone here is very helpful so if you have questions don't hesitate to ask.

    Hi Debbie
Welcome to the forum from Massachusetts.
My first quilt was a log cabin,I would start with something like a 9patch or 4 patch, rail fence. Those are all very easy and all straight lines no curves to deal with.
