Welcome from NJ! I made two rag quilts. One was with flannel front and back. I didn't prewash the flannel yardage. Just threw in a few color catchers when I washed it on cold after it was finished. No problems even with the reds in the quilt. I used this tutorial for mine: Bloom: Raw-edge layer cake quilt tutorial
I made mine with the Warm and Natural cotton batting but it did make for a very nice, warm, but a bit heavy quilt! For a baby, I would try next time to use flannel as the batting and use charms instead of a layer cake. I think it would make it more snuggly. I like the idea of minky on the back in a pretty contrasting color. It shows nicely this way in the ragging. Definitely purchase ragging shears to save your hand. The other one I made was homespun cottons but I haven't put the label on yet. Here is a picture of the flannel one I made. http://forum.missouriquiltco.com/mem...quilt-mom.html
    I am Sew Blessed!
