I tried this 2 days ago on a tablerunner.... didn't work! I mean it stuck enough to machine baste the quilt but definitely not the way it showed in the tutorial. I was using 100% cotton fabric and warm and natural batting.

I think the spray starch would definitely work for ONE BLOCK but the weight of a whole quilt???? I am not for sure that would work. Besides when I free motion, it might take me several days to quilt the whole thing and if it only holds for 6 hours or so, that wouldn't work for me. I think the difference between the starch and basting spray, is that the basting spray stays tacky and the spray starch does not have any tackiness to it.
I'm sure gonna try the spray starch! When I use the quilt basting spray I always have a little residue that settles on things in my room, even though I use plastic bags over my tables when I lay out my quilt top and batting. And my hands get kind of sticky, too.
Hmm, this is interesting. Hulamoon and Josephine09, thank you for sharing the results of your tests. I tried hair spray on a mug rug once and it worked well (smelled good too.) Then I tried it on a child's quilt (36" x 40") and had very poor results with the hair spray.
