Connecting the ends of binding without a binding tool
I know that a lot of people have shared that they find it confusing when they try to connect the ends of their quilt binding. For years I fumbled my way through it. I'd eventually get it, but it was trial and error and I never really knew how I got there. lol I tried the binding tool, but couldn't make heads or tails of it. So I decided to take pictures of what I did so I would have it to look at for reference. So I'm hoping this may help someone (or it may confuse them more). LOL I've never done this before so it may not be as clear as I think it is. Forgive me if that is the case.
Instructions are above the pictures.
1. Starting in the middle of one side of the quilt, stitch on the binding leaving a 15” loose tail at the beginning of the binding. (I leave more than most people suggest, but I find it much easier to do if I have plenty of room to work.) Stitch the binding around the quilt edge, stopping 15” before your starting point and leaving a 15” length of binding loose at the end.
2. Lay the quilt with the edge toward you and overlap the bindings left side over the right side. If the underneath binding is too long to lay flat, trim it a little.

Then about half-way between the beginning and ending stitching, mark a straight line.

3. Shift the top (left) binding down slightly and mark the bottom (right) binding directly under the mark that is on the top binding.

4. Now open right binding, right side up, and mark the entire width as shown in the picture. Open the left binding, wrong side up and mark it using the mark that you made in step 2 as a guide. The mark on step 2 is actually on the right side of the fabric, but you will be marking the wrong side in this step.

5. Now place the bindings as shown in the picture below.
Notice where the markings are. Pin in place.

6. Mark a line diagonally. You will be stitching on this line.

7. After stitching, trim seam to 1/4” and press open. Also, repress the fold-line of the binding in this area.Attachment 117056
8. Place the binding along the quilt edge and stitch.

Thanks stationarymom and mommamarsh. I'm hoping that it will helpful to someone. :)
Re: Connecting the ends of binding without a binding tool
The method I use if just about the same, except I fold over the ends and butt them against each other, and finger press (instead of marking it). The rest is the same. I tried the binding tool and I was a tool using it. Thanks for posting your method.

I've been using a similar method now for a while... it's amazing how many different videos i've watching and methods,, but THIS one has stuck in my brain... I crank out the quilts like crazy, knowing i can FINISH them completely in one swoop!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Monique! I never thought about finger pressing. I'll have to try that. :)
Re: Connecting the ends of binding without a binding tool
I like this way the best too. So clean and no bumps!

I also do it this way. I cannot use the binding tool.
Re: Connecting the ends of binding without a binding tool
Thank you. Your photos are great! I always have a little trouble with this part, afraid to cut the tail off in case it's too short, then over estimate and get a pucker when there's too much fabric, then undo and redo. Sometimes too many times to admit. I have even joined my strips with a basting stitch, just knowing I will only be ripping them out 15 minutes later! This should be a big help.
Re: Connecting the ends of binding without a binding tool
Thank you so much! I have struggled with the final joining on a binding for years and I never got the hang of the binding tool!
I gave up and just butted the ends together, pressed in a fold and sewed a straight seam.
This will be my next binding. So thanks again!
Re: Connecting the ends of binding without a binding tool
Super thanks!!!!! Always at a loss when it come to connecting the ends....usually just butt them!!!!! Now I can make it look professional!!!!
Re: Connecting the ends of binding without a binding tool
Good pictures! Great explanation! Thanks!
Re: Connecting the ends of binding without a binding tool
This is really good and simple enough for my little brain. Thanks.
Just one addition : I folded the unbound portion of the quilt in two after marking the lines, which got it out of the way and made it easier for me to sew the diagonal seam.
