One block could be a flag. Small stars would be a problem. Is he by chance from Texas? If so, the Texas flag only has one star. Someone posted a picture of a beautiful flag quilt, and someone else posted one earlier using tumbling squares for the stipes. Might be an idea. . .

I know how you feel. QOV does have an awful lot of rules for quilts that are being donated. Your doing it the right way, Send it to him directly. When I do mine I am going to send to friend of my nephew and possibly another friend, USMC, that I met on FB. She is amazing.

Kathy, I've been to the "Quilts of Valor" website and was a bit turned off by the "do and do not list". I like the fact that I know this young man I'm making this for. I'm fairly new to quilting and my first thought was....what if I make a mistake and do something they don't want? Will my quilt just sit with no home?

Marilyn, I am making this for a high school friend of my son. I lost track of him for several years after the kids left home and have recently reconnected with him on Facebook, he's married with children and as wonderful as I remember him. When he got deployed for the 4th time....I was overwhelmed with the need to make this for him.

So, I settled on the D9P. I've made one or two, it's an easy pattern, goes together quickly and will show off my fabric selection nicely. I want it in his hands YESTERDAY!

Thank you all for your responses!
