    Default Definition of Border

I'm sorry, please don't be angry at me for mentioning this. Our English language has so many words in it that sound the same but are spelled differently. One that we quilters use a lot is the word BORDER.

BORDER--is defined as the perimeter around a given space. We apply borders to our quilts.

BOARDER--is defined as someone who pays money to stay in a space, as in paying room and board at college.

    Just thought I'd mention it.

The ones that bother me are "their, there", "your's, yours", and most of all (although it is used widely even with journalists) "that" being used for who and/or whom. Also bothersome . . . "me and her", "me and him". Never put yourself first.

    Thank you, Mrs. Price.
    Be warned. I am BORED.
    This could be dangerous.

When you get cold just go stand in the corner.
    They are usually 90 degrees.

A giraffe's coffee would be cold by the time it reached the bottom of his throat.
Ever think about that? No? You only think about yourself??

Now Jean, don't leave out the boarders- those who ride boards-like snowboards.

And my personal cringe worthy phrase is "I seen...." like "I seen a boarder yesterday on a pink snowboard."

Yes, I noticed that too, and I really must admit, that I'm a little relieved, that it is not only me, struggeling with the english language..

But I think, there is in general a problem with correct orthography at/in/on (?) the internet.
It is really annoying me in german forums, sometimes I'm under the impression, that the writer never saw a school from the inside. Often it is just lazyness, especially in german, where we have nouns starting with a capital letter. 80% ignore that in a forum, just like the punctuation. A text like that is really hard to read.
    Best wishes and Greetings

Or the skaters, but they don't call them boarders! Or surfer dudes! Showing my generational bias in leaving these definitons out of my lesson for today! Thank heaven I've not been run out of the forum for mentioning it!

Kerstin I love this! You have NO idea how many times I have thought the same thing!

It is not just you and your countrymen that have cornered the market on the lazy writing problem. You should see the stuff my sister has to sift through when grading high school papers. I would need a crate of red pencils to correct the students' work. She says that they are not allowed to use red pencils any longer, because it makes the kids feel like the didn't do well. Aaarrgggh! When you can't tell the difference between to, too, and two - YOU DID NOT DO WELL! By the way, the kids can't receive "F" grades on an assignment any longer. They get a "NQTY", Not Quite There Yet. How is that going to work for you in the corporate world?

My daughter is going to hate having me as her mother by the time she is done with school. That kind of work is NOT going to fly in my house.
OK! Off my soap box on that one!
