Don's new friend on the beach
Don went to our local beach after doing some grocery shopping this morning. He set up his chair by the tide pool area where I like to take photos.
He saw a girl swimming and something large/dark behind her coming in. At first he was worried that it might be a small shark and got up to warn her. But no, it was a seal heading in. He sat back down and relaxed. Low knowing that this guy was going to end up being his buddy for part of the day.
He came in like the shows at Sea World, road the wave in and slided over the sand. As you can see his face is full of sand. Love the expression, "I'm pooped, you can take all the photos you want, I'm not moving!" He stayed right where he landed about five feet from Don's chair. Never left, wasn't afraid when Don got up to get stuff out of his cooler or move the umbrella. Listened when he talked to him. Yes, we talk to all wild life, we're a bit loopy that way. I even talk to the crabs when I talk pictures of them.
I'm quite jealous 'cause I've only seen them swimming or on the rocks, never on our beach. :( But I'm glad Don had some company while I'm with the kids. lol The Hawaiian Seal (per life guard) not sure if a Monk Seal is the same, did bark with Don, guess he was happy with Don's conversation. haha
At least Tigger the Tiger Shark wasn't there today 'cause he's over 10 feet long and he scares off the scuba diver tourists that like to stop off over the turtle reef. The life guards think it's funny that I've named him that, I don't think like any sharks, not even the sand sharks that supposedly won't even bite your toes. A shark is a shark in my book! Let me stick with a cute SEAL!!

I guess I never think of seals in Hawaii...duh! What an experience and how lucky you and Don are to live in paradise! :)
Re: Don's new friend on the beach
I am curious though as to why you live in Hi. My little sister is there now because her hubby is stationed there. He is a nurse and will be at Tripler Hosp. Also, have you and Aloha Sandy met? Roxanne(little sis) wants me to come visit sometime - they will be there for 3 years - maybe I can meet you and Sandy - if I come out. Love the seal by the way!

You are so lucky Ruby!!!! I love seals! I used to catch sand sharks on Huntington Pier in Calif. My DH caught a barracuda once. We caught and released. I wanted nothing to do with any kind of shark. lol Love the photos. Hugs, Jan L.
Re: Don's new friend on the beach
How cool is that? Only place I will ever see seals is at the zoo. Word of warning though, seal like any wild animal can be aggressive. With you on the whole shark thing. A shark is a shark is a shark.
Re: Don's new friend on the beach
Poor little fellow looks pooped. At least Don kept him entertained or was it the other way around?
Re: Don's new friend on the beach
I'm sitting here in the woods of Alabama, a really pretty area actually, but I'm trying not to drool with jealousy.
Never been to Hawaii probably never will and love water, sand, water.....soo peaceful and gorgeous!!!

HI Quiltlover, as you can see I am in Alabama, too. We don't have seals but we do have that glorious beach. Try to take a trip there this Summer and enjoy it. There is a neat quilt shop in the Gulf Shores/Foley area, kinda in the woods, too. Sea Quilt Shop 22131 Cotton Creek Drive Gulf Shores, AL 36542

Aloha Kathy,
We came from the LA area to Oahu because Don needed to get on the VA medical program and after two years of trying in CA with no luck, Tripler/Hawaii was our best change. Don was laid off the day after being released to go back to work after open heart surgery, he worked for Fluor Daniels for 21 years. We were transfered 2 times, I worked there for 10 years. With the economy as it is, he's been out of work for more than 2.5 years. We lost everything material wise, however we have each other TG, I married him at 20. :) We've been married 31 years, he's my everything!!
Sold off everything that was left after living on our savings, sold off my business equipment, came with 5 suitcases, sent one 4'x4'x4' crate and shipped Don's stock 72 convertible yellow Mustang with 39000 original miles (his baby). We lived in the North West country of Oahu in Makaha Valley, very rural on the 15th floor, one mile from the beach in the old Sheratan Resort that was converted to condos in the 80s. 680 sq ft - one bedroom, one must really, really love your spouse...or you will kill each other...after living in a four bedroom, 2800 sq ft - 1 acre house with pool. lol
I was able to get Don on the VA Med Admin within two months with Tripler!! Now instead of $2000/mo of presciptions for his heart we pay 3 x $9 and $25 for doctor visits. He had a colonscoptomy $2600 that he should have for his age, $50 co-pay plus a bunch of other blood work/xrays that were due as an annual...free!! Now I don't have to worry about him, I don't have to worry about losing more clients 'cause they are losing their clients, who are losing their clients, etc. It's been a horrible cycle of small and corporate clients losing business these last four years. My stress level has gone done a lot since Tripler's Veterans Admin has helped me processed the paperwork, not like Loma Linda in California, they made my life hell!
I haven't met Sandy yet in person, she lives on the other side of Honolulu about 45 miles (with road conditions, 1 hour drive). After I come back, she's heading to Cali to see her son in Cali. I'm sure we'll meet up sometime in August. :)
You really need to visit your sister, the Island is a beautiful place. I don't know why you sound so negative about Hawaii unless you are just missing your sister or you don't like to fly. lol If it's because of stories about locals against "haoles" or "whites" that's a bunch of BS. It's only true if your a jerk yourself, if your an ars on the mainland and your an ars on the island, yes your odds are that you'll be treated like an ars on the island. If you're friendly, smile and treat others like you would want to be treated, you have no problems. We haven't had any problems at all, and Don looks like a narc, cop or former military. The locals or Hawaiians tend to address him as "Boss" or "Brother".
Should you visit...you are welcome to come by Makaha Valley and I'll introduce you to Tigger and our other friends with much Aloha.
Huggers, Ruby
