Default Does anyone out there do Free Motion Embroidery?

I have been debating for sometime on buying an Embroidery Machine. In my research, I just came across some you tube videos on Free Motion Embroidery. Do you do this? These videos certainly make it look "doable" however I was curious to hear from FME people out there, how they learned and about their success, or failure in this endeavor!

I've just got started with this. It takes quite a bit of practice but once you get over that "ARGH I can go anywhere!" moment and start to get some control it's really fun. I have made some cushions for my daughters where I transfered their drawings onto water soluble interfacing and embroidered through that. They came out really well (and now I have a pile of drawings to embroider). I just bought a darning foot for my machine (an 11 year old basic Brother model), lowered the feed dogs and had a go. I tried with an embroidery hoop at first but soon found that it was much easier, at least for me to embroider with a layer of batting underneath. As with anything practice is key. I found Leah Day's free motion quilting videos extremely helpful as there are some similar issues to get to grips with.

I also found this an extremely useful video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SW05okFI4uM

I have just started with it and just dove into it with a king size quilt and so far it is great. I think it is alot of fun and you have to remember as a friend says to me there are no Quilt POLICE so just do it and enjoy and be creative. I loved it.

Never even heard of it til you posted about it. Looks like it wouldn't be too hard. I like the octo hoop thing, but don't want to pay almost $90 for it. But think the concept could be adapted to a less costly option.

Many years ago, I did two free motion embroidery projects, and they turned out spectacular. One was an eagle head and one was a tiger head. They were transfers, which you filled in with thread. I think they call it thread painting these days. I gave both away to relatives, who have since passed on, wish I still had them, because they were really cool!

I think you used a regular embroidery hoop turned upide down with stabilizer under it, feed dogs down, darning foot, just like FMQ within a hoop.
