Antique Singer I found on Craigslist - worth it???
I found an ad for an antique singer for $15... in a cabinet...
I emailed the owner, who said it is in working condition - I'm planning on at least taking a look at it, but I'd love to hear thoughts from those of you who have one and sew with it. I'm specifically thinking of using it for heavier weight fabrics. Would it be strong enough for bags, totes, and such? Here is a pic of the machine:

I appreciate any insight from you guys! :)

Re: Antique Singer I found on Craigslist - worth it???
Ask the owner for the serial number (if you can't see it when you blow up the picture). Then you can figure out which model it is, from an online list of Singer serial numbers, and from there how much of a workhorse it is.
Someone on here may be able to tell what model it is just by looking at the picture, but not me!

For $15, I would jump on it!

Re: Antique Singer I found on Craigslist - worth it???
I agree with Lisa! What is there to lose?

Re: Antique Singer I found on Craigslist - worth it???
Take a piece of heavy duty fabric and try it out. If it's working that sounds like a good price to me. Some might pay that much for a fixer upper.

Re: Antique Singer I found on Craigslist - worth it???
That's what I'm thinking... if it truly is working, it might be worth it just to play with it!

The cabinet is worth that much.

Re: Antique Singer I found on Craigslist - worth it???
It looks to be a 99/99k and yes it's worth it. However be prepared that it might not sew great right off the bat.
These old gals need to be cleaned and oiled regularly and she may have 50 year old dust bunnies and gunk gumming up the works if she wasn't kept up well. It is easy though to restore them to good working condition. I recently bought a 99, cleaned and restored her, and she sews beautifully!
I think the 15s aren't known for going though anything too tough, but the 99s and some of the other models can do it. If she's missing some parts, they are very easy to find online.

Re: Antique Singer I found on Craigslist - worth it???
Ok,
I have the serial number - it is a 66, which IS a heavy duty home machine, according to the website that Sonic provided (thank you my dear). This machine is a good one so if it works, it's mine. I'm going to look at it tomorrow evening...

We'll see... hubby is going with me so he can check the electrical things...
There are no accessories in the picture, and it does look like the bobbin cover might be missing (or it may be in the drawer ;))
If I end up getting it, I will probably take it out of the cabinet that it is in and use the one in my living room for now. (and store the smaller one) When I switch rooms with my daughter, I'll be able to have my Viking, my Kenmore, and possibly this Singer out for use in one space... oh... AND my serger! YeeHaw!

Re: Antique Singer I found on Craigslist - worth it???
Bobbin covers and accessories are very easy to replace, reasonably priced. Let me know because I have some that may be just what you are looking for . . . and I am downsizing~~

Re: Antique Singer I found on Craigslist - worth it???
Wiring also easily replaced.

Re: Antique Singer I found on Craigslist - worth it???
I BOUGHT IT!!!!!!
I'm going to take some time tomorrow and go through it and clean and oil where necessary. I tested her out - seems like she runs well. I didn't have to worry about the bobbin cover - there was a bag with feet (including a ruffler...), needles, bobbins, etc. and the bobbin cover was there :) Everything looks great electrically, and she has a knee lever! I'll post pics tomorrow. Thanks, guys for the input - I'd say it is $15 very well spent ;)

Re: Antique Singer I found on Craigslist - worth it???
Oh, Leah . . . we hooked another one!!
-
Re: Antique Singer I found on Craigslist - worth it???
Woohoo! And if you figure out how to use the ruffler, you can let me know! Mine came with all kinds of crazy feet that I will probably never learn to use. I'm just not excited enough about ruffles & pleats to figure it out.

It appears to be a 15.
Singer Sewing Machines 15, 15K, 15N and derived variations
They have the thread tension dial coming off the front end like yours does. Beautiful machine too! Congrats to both you and Songbird on the beautiful new additions!!
And I'm with Claire.... mine came with all kinds of wicked looking attachments too. If you figure out how to use them let us know!

There should be a serial number on the right, just behind the spool for threading the bobbin. Then Google "Singer serial numbers" and you'll find a website that tells you what model it is and what year it was made. The manuals are available for download free -- don't remember where -- but it was easy to find.
That's a nice-looking cabinet! Mine is trashed -- shabby chic paint, in brown. Not a good choice!

that is probably a 15. When the tension dial is on the end instead of the front it is usually a 15.

Thank you!! Now I need to start playing with it, getting it cleaned up and see what she can do. And a name! Ideas? LOL I'm useless!

Re: Antique Singer I found on Craigslist - worth it???
This website is helpful too -- there's more than one variety of 15. If I had to guess, I'd say it's a 15-90, but if you read this post you can probably figure it out. Re: Antique Singer I found on Craigslist - worth it???
Oh, and it's a sister of mine -- AG901091, same batch of serial numbers! How cool is that! Mine is a 15-91.

Re: Antique Singer I found on Craigslist - worth it???
And I just read that blog post again, & I don't see a side mounted motor in your picture -- so now I'm placing my bet that yours is a 15-91, like mine!
