Ditto! Canned air just pushes lint balls into tighter places.

Never, ever blow in to or use canned air to clean lint out of your machine.

My first sewing machine did exactly that and it was the timing. I went nuts trying to figure it out and tried everything. I brought it in to the shop they ran it two seconds and said timing. It was a cheap machine It so cost me less to buy a new one then to fix it.
Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.
What model machine is this? There are a lot of blogs and YouTube videos with very good help. I wouldn't mind hunting down some that might help you.
If you opened the case and used canned air, it should be fine. You just don't want to do it unless you completely expose the machinery, because lint and moisture will be pushed into nooks and crannies and wreak havoc. Same goes for blowing with your own breath, best not do that at all because of the moisture.
I hope you get it working, many cheap machines are fixable but as you said the repair cost is close to the price of a new one. I'm sewing on a very cheap basic machine and have learned how to do maintenance and troubleshoot; it's a very good and cheap way to learn how a sewing machine works. It's a pretty good feeling to figure it out yourself![]()
