This is NOT my quilt. However, it is so very, very much just like this that I'm blown away. I will get pictures of mine in the morning, if the sun is out.

So why not finish it with vintage fabrics or materials? Real ones picked up from an estate sale or something, not reproductions. Maybe this will satisfy both of you.

Sandy, at one point in time that top was most likely made by someone who intended to finish it and have it used. I cannot imagine the time, energy and patience involved in making a top like this. If you love it, finish it up as you wish for yourself. That way the maker's hard work and effort will not have gone to waste, and it will finally be treasured by someone who loves it.

So pretty. I say finish it the way you want & use it. I always find it sad when I see unused handmade linens at the thrift store. Someone sank hours of work into it, with the most modern materials and tools she had; if she was around now, I don't think she would insist that it had to be finished her way. She'd probably take a look at your LAQ and ask to have a go ....

I would machine quilt it so you can get it finished and used. That's the goal isn't it? To have it draped over a bed or someone's lap keeping them warm. Get that quilt into service!

I recently had the opportunity to finish 2- 30yr.old quilt tops...I machine quilted them....they both came out beautifully. ..one was not mine but the other is and I plan on using it. I am so happy with how they came out and glad I made the decision to do them.

Boy, can you imagine the excitement on the quilter's face if she got to use some of our modern machines? I think she would be beyond pleased someone is going to use her creation rather than it lying in a drawer forever.

If you feel called to finish the mission I would do whatever pleases you. If not large enough to do what you want I can see it being a beautiful center panel. It could also be a duvet cover that is not quilted if large enough.

So many intriquing possibilities. Let us know what your many talents lead you to do.

You could always pay someone to hand quilt it and pay them handsomely, because to me that sounds like the right option, that quilt looks like it could be from the 1800s. And as sonic suggested get some vintage fabrics or find reproduction fabric from the estimated time period. That way you are paying homage to the value of the quilt, and respecting it at the same time.

I will ask you this question, which you do not have to answer, it is more a question for your mind to hash out to help you. Ultimately, is the value of the quilt really important? The origin of the quilt is unknown. But, the utilitarian form of quilts was just that to be used and to keep someone cold warm. Quilts have become a status symbol for their values and more overlooked for the job they do.

A small part of me would like to think that whatever you decide to go with will not be wrong (no quilt police). And that someone who pieced that will be very happy in heaven seeing their UFO finally completed.

If this is a quilt you would love to use (on a bed, couch, picnic, whatever...), I would say don't be afraid to macine quilt it so you can love it . In my head, I would love to hand quilt alot of things. Realistically, at this point in my life, it's just not doable, so large things would languish (staring at an unfinished baby quilt right now...). Another option might be to pay someone to hand quilt it for you
