Sewing room set up but....
Ok, so I've mentioned I'm losing my sewing room and that I am going to use part of our bedroom. We have a huge master bedroom, so I've got plenty of room, that's not the problem. I've thought about it off and on since I knew I had to move to our bedroom, but I guess I kind of put it out of my mind, trying to convince myself it wouldn't be a problem. Well I've had it moved one day and yes it's a problem!
Hubby works nights sometimes, guess what!?? He's asleep and I want to sew! He told me it wouldn't wake him up, but I can't do that to him. I know when he works nights he doesn't get much sleep and I don't want to make it worse. I guess I'm going to have to plan a little better. I still cut my fabric on the dining room table, maybe I'll have to plan to cut and do hand sewing type things when he's sleeping.
Anyone know of a super secret quiet sewing machine??
Re: Sewing room set up but....
Dr just recently said I could sew a bit when it's comfortable. And DH put my small table and just the machine in the living room for me so I could watch TV or be with him. Just the table and the machine... my cutting, pressing and all that is still in my sewing room. Maybe you could do that? It helps me to get my walking in everyday too. Back and forth... LOL
Re: Sewing room set up but....
A treadle machine is pretty darn quiet.

Not mine.... Darn thing clacks like crazy.
If I wanted to sew at night, my sewing room is on the same level as the bedrooms, I had my son bring my machine down to the dining room table. Now that I have a featherweight, I leave it in the dining room and use it when needed.

Is there any chance your dh might wear earplugs if you know you would like to sew?
Re: Sewing room set up but....
When my DH worked the 4 pm to 12 midnight shift, I sat up a small sewing space in a corner of our living room. While it wasn't the best place, I didn't have too much trouble. I used to like to sew during the time the kids took their naps when they were young, and with my DH sleeping in our master bedroom, it was a great place to sew .....the bedrooms were upstairs, so the kids and DH slept really good. Also, DH slept with the radio on....or occasionally the TV so as to drown out the noises in the house....and it worked great.

Hubby is a pretty heavy sleeper and he sleeps with a fan and the TV on so I will probably be ok. I would feel so guilty if I woke him up. I guess I should try it once and see how it goes. I can always take my machine downstairs to the dining room if I need to.

Sounds like a plan Lori.....like you say you can always take your sewing machine downstairs if need be.

I just got the Baby Lock Aria and it is quiet. I was totally surprised how quiet it is.
Re: Sewing room set up but....
That sounds like a great idea, to try it and see how it works out. If you've got a rhythm to your work it might be just fine because those sorts of sounds can drift into the background and go unnoticed.
Another thought is something that absorbs sound, maybe something like an anti vibration mat under your machine. My sewing room is in my bedroom also, but after we had construction I'm working on a temporary desk and apparently the noise of my machine travels downstairs now. I'm pondering getting a mat for under my machine, as I think it will be a bit longer before I can move my sewing room to another room as planned.
Re: Sewing room set up but....
My DH sleeps so poorly that even me walking to the bathroom wakes him up. I wouldn't dare try to sew on a machine anywhere in the house at night. My sewing space is upstairs and he can still hear me. I have gone to the living room and tried to hand sew, but he can still tell me when I walked through the house.
I would try a small portable in the dining room and see if that bothers him. Good luck!
