My DGD is going to be 8 this year and I was starting to look at sewing machines for her. When I was at the Janome dealership he told me that they have several machines that are fitted with the guard when sent to schools. So the dealer is a good place to start.
My problem is that my DGD is in MA and I am in NC and it's not looking like I'll be able to get to see her very soon with DH's current health issues. So I may be putting this off for a while longer.

Please let us know what you decided to get for her! Thanks for all the info!
My friends hear the song in my heart, and sing it to me when my memory fails. 

When I started sewing right around the age of 9 or 10, I had a battery operated one for what seemed like two weeks before my mom quickly graduated me to this

Singer Automatic Sewing Machine Minimender from Singer | Sewing Machines | household-appliances-store | HomeShop18.com

Which didn't last long either for some strange reason (but maybe I'm just bitter it broke down right as I got into quilting), but it was a smaller machine that suited beginner needs perfectly from what I remember. I'm not sure it's available at all anymore, as I was doing a little googling, but I'll admit I wasn't looking hard for anything other than a picture. I wouldn't be super worried about finger guards, but that's a personal thing. When I was just a little older than she was with this Singer, I never hurt myself (proud to say, too, because I am s u p e r clumsy).
Anyway, the point is that this machine was my starter and lasted me at least three or four years. The real reason we retired it was because I really really really wanted a heavier duty one (Christmas did pull through for me-), and for some reason it had started skipping stitches. My dad was the only one with a computer at the time, so while i'm sure that was fixable, he wasn't very in-depth to looking for machine solutions. So, in short, it lasted me into my teens and if I pulled it out right now from god knows where, I could still probably get it to work.

    Good luck!

My DGD (she is 9), wanted a sewing machine for Christmas a couple years ago. I got her the Janome Sew Mini for around $50. It was a cute tiny machine. It sewed a nice s straight stitch and was very light weight. But it was hard to teach her how to use. The thread spool was tiny and the spool often popped off. It did not have a light and that made it difficult for me to thread the needle and for her to see where she was sewing. The foot pedal was small and would be outgrown quickly by a growing foot. Lexi did not like sewing on it at all.

This past Christmas, we got the teal Janome Hello Kitty 3/4 machine for $120 from Amazon. It is an awesome machine and it has a light!!! This machine will last her for many years, if her Mommy or I don't steal it first!

My brat at 8 learned on my Pfaff 1475. She wanted to make a t-shirt for her father. As an adult she had a Babylock Ellure. She did a few embroidered rag quilts on it. She doesn't sew. She brings it all back from the UK for me to deal with.

Awww, how sweet. She looks so proud of her accomplishment, and rightfully so! Gee $60 is a bargain for a Janome. Happy sewing to you AND your granddaughter.

From my own personal experience, when my daughter (who was yung) wanted to sew. Get her a good standard machine, teach her the safety RULES in which can use a sewing machine and she will impress you. Mostly, she want get discouraged. If she doesn't have trouble with the machine and you don't have to get several ( like me) . It will beeasier on both of you.

Now my girl loVes Hand Piecing. She took sewing classes and knows how to use the sewing machine.
She is a bit kin to her Moma, I love Hand Piecing Too.
Do whats best for her abilities.

Move her up if, you think she's READY. I just never feel that holding them back is beneficial, if she's ready to go forward. Learning early is awesome. So glad your starring this GIFT with her.
    HAve Fun, both of you.

I love that she has gotten the sewing bug!! All of the big box pattern companies (McCalls, Simplicity, Vogue) have 18" doll patterns - which go on sale frequently at JoAnn's if you have one nearby. I think McCalls has some specifically marked easy to sew. I usually wait until they go on sale for one or two dollars, then stock up!
