    Default Quilt store hours.....

I really wish quilt stores stayed open later on weekdays for the working community. I do understand from a business perspective why the hours are what they are if numbers show ythat it's not worth the cost to stay open til 6 verses 5. What I don't understand is the situation that happened today. My co worker was going to tx which is an hour away, I asked her if she had time would she stop and get me a row for my row by row... I work til 6. She walked in the store at 5 which is yes when they close, but the door was open to shop and she was refused the sale due to they already closed down the register. I told her it's fine but it's really not why let customers in if your not willing to sell merchandise? Opinions?

How can they wven know how good business will be unless they stay at least a couple nights a week.

And when you turn someone away like that, you dont just lose one sale, you are losing other you sales you may have received from retun visits.

And I would think for security you would want your door locked when closing out a register.

The time issues is pretty much I dont bother with shop hops and row by row. I work a lot and could never get to shops except for saturdays. Too much trouble to get all around on one saturday since they are spread apart, which would mean giving up way too many saturdays of sewing time, what little time I have. If I could check out one or two a week it would be much better.

Seems like they made a mistake. Lock the door first, then close down the register. I expect that starting the register could be a production, so I understand that. But it was their error. I, too, often wish my LQS were open later. My favorite closed last August. The proprietor ran the shop herself, so I understand that after an 8 hour day, she was ready to go home. However, would she have been able to stay in business if she had opened later (12 noon) and stayed open until 8 pm? Perhaps?

My question, since she was already in the store, did they at least give her the free pattern for the row?

The only night my LQS is open late is on Friday and that is until 6:30. Sometimes I'll run over there after work, on Friday, or I have to wait until Saturday and then she's only open from 9 - 12.

I know that some small family ran businesses have one day a week that they will stay open later. So instead of closing at 5 PM, they will close at 7 PM or later. I agree with the others that usually one locks the doors when closing out the cash register if they are alone. Larger businesses usually leave one register open while closing out the other - two people working, one person takes the money to the back office to count it while the other stays up front to wait on customers.

I just find it odd not to be open at least one night during the week. So many quilters work. Makes you feel like they think their only customers are retired. Yes, I think opening later and closing later is an excellent idea. Doing that a couple of days a week would be something I'd give a try if I was a shop owner. If there's not enough traffic the shop can always go back to their previous schedule. It would need to be advertised so customers know about it. Just sticking a sign on the door isn't enough.

I guess I am really lucky in my area. There are a lot of shops within 40 miles of me that have a least one or two nights they stay open until 8 or 9 o'clock on weekdays. They really think of the people who have to work until 5. Those other shops would be wise to open at least one night a week later to their customers.

How disappointing. And your friend was so nice to make sure and stop by for you. Why not call the manager to talk about what happened. Just ask her straight out to send you the pattern since getting there is so difficult for you. Her response will tell you a lot.
