My husband just had a fairly large pen disaster on the pocket of one of his favorite shirts. I sprayed it with hairspray, one of those stain remover products that comes in a spray bottle AND rubbed the stain with a bar of Naptha soap. I let it sit for several days and voila! The entire stain came out. I think the combination of three products used at once rather than just using one did the trick. I washed it in cold water twice. The first washing took out almost all of the stain. There was a tiny spot where the stain was more concentrated so I treated that again and washed it again. Completely clear of all stains. We were both happy since we both really like this particular shirt. I told him he needed a pocket protector. I'm sure some of you are aware of jokes regarding nerds and their pocket protecters. He said he couldn't believe I was suggesting he use one. hahaha (He's a Chemical Engineer if that gives you an idea of why he and I were laughing.)

I would wash only the section where the pee is. Wash it gently by hand, blot it with a towel and smooth out flat to dry. I think you might ruin your quilt top if you wash the whole thing right now and please don't send it to a dry cleaner. Deal with the spot and the odor now and then give your quilt a good wash as soon as the binding is on it.

Definitely NO, to the dry cleaner, as well!

I would try Dawn Dish Washing Detergent on the black stain you think is grease. Dawn is great at any kind of grease stain on fabric.

(If all the pieces fit perfectly, people will think it was made by a machine!) LOL

Lestoil is also fabulous on any grease stain! Even after a drying cycle...

Well, good news and bad news.

I talked to the ladies at the quilt shop and they agreed that I should wash the quilt. So last night I filled the washer with cold water, added granulated Oxy-clean and baking soda. I also sprayed Zout directly on the black mark. I left it all night. This morning I ran through the cycle with a second rinse. The black mark is almost gone and I am wondering how to quilt so that I can cover it up even more!! However, the back of the top is an absolute mess. I just want to cry. I know it won't show after it's trimmed and quilted, but looking at the raveled strings seems daunting.

At this point it's a good thing her birthday is in August. I have time to scrap this and start over.

I am going to try the Fels Naptha on the black mark and soak some more.

Thank you for your ideas and commiseration.

PS--I think the incident stemmed from Miss Kitty not wanting to "run the gauntlet" through the cat door because the big dogs lay right up next to the door when they are outside. Because this is about a week old and she shows no signs of repeating the behavior.

I hate to think what the back of your top looks like, but if the stitching looks secure the mess will disappear when it's backed and quilted.

Poor Miss Kitty! Can you rig up something to help her feel safe when making her exit? Even a pot plant, or a comfy cushion for the dogs but just a little further away from the door might give her confidence.

Hope your quilt turns out OK.

Resolve carpet cleaner took permanent marker out of my daughter's robe when nothing else would.

Mary D--you gave me a start with your suggestion of a "pot plant". Even thought marijuana is supposed to become legal in Oregon, I don't think I will be having one as a houseplant. Hee, hee. Miss Kitty might like it.

On a more serious note, I did get the stain out. After my last post I applied some carpet de-spotter that my neighbor had, some Zote soap because I had no fels-naphtha and some spray Oxy-clean and let it soak in cold water all night. The black mark is completely gone and, I assume, the cat pee after this many washes! So I dried it in the dryer and will NOT be telling my sister-in-law the history of her quilt!!

Thank you for your commiserations, suggestions, and encouragement.
