Hi all. I'm on vacation and would like if anyone has a recommendation for a quilt shop to visit.
Search the web.
Hi Cyndi...........if this is your 1st time to D.C. I would highly recommend seeing as many of the monuments and memorials as possible. The Vietnam Wall Memorial and the Korean War Memorial are jaw dropping impressive.
DH and I are here with 12 members of our family, all seven kids except one, all three kids-in-law and seven grandkids. We are renting a house right in D.C. We've been to the National Mall and plan to see some of the Smithsonian museums and the zoo. I'd like to visit a quilt shop or two and will google them but thought if there was someone in the area that had one to recommend we'd go there.
Our son Jacob (age 28) is very sick. He spent 15 hours in the ER this week and had a battery of tests done. He has elevated enzymes in his liver and a bad case of the flu. We are hoping he gets better before we leave on Saturday. He's been in good spirits for how sick he is.
I (with the help of quilter.martha) cut out an entire king-sized quilt before we left so that I could work at piecing it during fee time here, but the table here is a high one with bar stools! There is no place for me to sew. I'm disappointed but now have a project to work on as soon as I get home!
I'd love to visit DC again. I went years ago for work and stayed over the weekend to see the sites. I asked at the front desk of the hotel if the monumens were within walking distance. She say yes and gave me directions. It was so far! I should have asked how many miles! I took a cab back to the hotel but so glad I went. It was July and my feet were sore and hot. I sat down and put my feet in the water and a feeling of thankfulness came over me. I believe we live in the best country in the world. Enjoy our nation's captial and let us know if you find a quilt shop.
Ha, I don't even want to talk about walking the Mall and half of downtown DC! I could barely move the next day. I swear that reflecting pool got longer and longer the farther we walked toward the Lincoln Memorial.
The only person I can think of that is/was sort of in that area is Ryan and I'm not sure when they are moving ...
Karen.....I know what you mean. Our family went to D.C. when I was in high school. Our parents kept telling us......."all the monuments & museums are along the mall & reflecting pool.......you just park the car and walk to them." They didn't tell us these buildings and monuments are each several blocks long! :D We walked until our legs were shorter.
Cyndi......I sure hope Jacob starts feeling better soon. Hope you find a good quilt shop. Last time I was there was the summer of 2001...........before I was put under the "spell" of quilting. :D
If Pretti Harris doesn't send a reply to this post, why don't you PM her? She works in DC, so she may know of some shops.
What about lifting your pedal on a box or a suitcase to lift it up. Then you can sit on the barstool and still sew, right?
Cyndi, welcome to the DC area! Two of my fav. quilt shops are Capital Quilts, they are in Gaithersburg, and Web Fabrics, out in Purceville. To die for. Unfortunately I don't know of shops in the DC area itself. I am sorry that I can't help in that way. It seems that I find new shops in the area all the time. IT's strange that I have been here just over twenty years, only quilting for about 4 and I find more and more that just seemed to pop up.
Good luck on your visit and I hope that you son recovers....
I can't think of any in DC either. Capital Quilts is a good place, Jenny Beyer's place is delicious. Small but her fabrics are gorgeous. There was a place in Frederick but it closed I believe.
Coming down my way - Fredericksburg - we have two shops. The Crazy Cousin and Quilt and Sewing Center. But I'm a bit far from DC to go to two shops.
Hey Cyndi.......I found this website. They have 3 locations. They have quilting fabrics along with other fabrics.

I was in D.C. a year or so ago. I had only been in Washington to go to the museums and had never walked the streets there. My daughter was doing an internship not far from the White House. I really enjoyed the visit. It's a beautiful city, at least the part where we were was really nice. I was impressed with how clean it was, the wide boulevards and the nice sidewalks. I was thrilled to walk on the mall and actually see the White House. I'd like to go back since there is a lot more to see that I didn't have time to visit.
How sad that your son is so ill. Poor guy! How nice to be able to rent a house there. I'm sure that makes the visit especially nice for all of you rather than staying in a hotel. Share pictures with us, Cyndi. Have fun and high hopes for your son to have a quick recovery.
DS lives in downtown DC...it is very much a town based on walking, the metro, and buses. Parking is only in your dreams. The only place I have ever walked more is where my DD lives...NYC!! Neither of them have a car at the moment. My feet hurt to think about visiting either of them.
Most of the quilt shops will be out of DC itself and in NOVA (Northern Virginia) and in Maryland. I really can't think of one in DC itself.
Hope your son feels better and you have a nice visit.
Cyndi - you are right in my backyard girl. It looks like everyone else has covered all the best things to do and see so I just say I hope you have a wonderful time in our nations capitol with your family.
I just remembered that there is a huge fabric store, several stories tall I think, I'll rattle my DIL's cage and see if I can get the name for you. Or I'm sure Ryan knows the name, maybe he'll pop in soon.
DD B found a fabric shop not far from where we are staying, so DH and I took a drive over there yesterday afternoon. It turned out to be a shop for ethnic clothing fabric! We had a great time looking around the shop, but there was not a regular bolt of cotton fabric to be found. We hope to try Jinny Beyer tomorrow but it is the last day of our vacation. Our drive down was about 12 hours long since we had to stop to let the children play once in a while, so we may not have any time for quilt shops along the way home. Oh, well!
Jacob is still very, very sick. He can hardly move because of the aches in his joints. He is sad and discouraged. The only positive sign that he might be getting better is that his appetite has increased from nothing to a little. DSIL is going to make him some chicken soup tonight. It has been a rough week for him, but he's thankful he is not home alone. He cannot take care of himself. We are thankful that so far no one else has come down with whatever it is he has. Say a prayer for him or send some good thoughts his way when you get the chance. We will all appreciate it.
I am just now looking at this thread :-(
I have heard great things about Web Fabrics. But, I mostly buy online. If you decide to go to Web Fabrics, please PM me. You will be passing through Sterling and the main road to Purcellville is 0.5 mile from my house.
Jinny Beyer Studio as suggested by Karen would be worth a visit too.
I hope Jacob feels better soon. I am thinking of him and sending him best wishes!!!
I think it's already been recommended, but DDIL says the big fabulous store is G Street Fabrics.
Hope Jacob is feeling better.
