Default Calling all bag ladies . . .

I'm about to try my first bag, and I have a question . . . Do any of you serge your seams?

No, all seams are enclosed, no raw edges. I'm not sure where this would make a difference.

Yes! I do serge seams on certain projects and a bag would definitely be one of them. I played a bag lady in a play one time. That was so much fun!

Not unless the pattern calls for it.

I thought maybe the serger would help compress the layers in the seam allowance.

Also wondering if the seam would be stronger (I really don't "get" sergers enough to know the answer to that).

Yes I do serge a lot of my seams to reduce bulk but I also sew the seam too as the serger stitches aren't small enough for my liking.

Funny about you playing a bag lady! Most of my working career my husband has called me a bag lady. For over 20 years I sewed in a garment bag factory and for 2 years I worked in a large company making food bags...lol...

My best friend, since high school, decided when our kids left home we were going to move to the Virgin Islands and become bag ladies, she even staked us out a bench while she was visiting there. In the years of waiting for the kids to leave, they never do really, we both got remarried and now we have to wait for our husbands to leave, will our time never come?

What's a serger? I have never used one so my answer would be no, I don't serge the seams. Good luck with your first bag.
Since you're always on my mind can you straighten out the mess up there?

I love to make bags, however, since I am scared silly of my serger, I do not serge any seams!
