What a waste of a 'day' sewing.
Had the whole day to sew, but did not start till about 11am. Spent 1 hour trying to find my glasses that I need to sew.
Thought I would make a zippered pouch, they can't be difficult , everyone has been making them right? But then I quilted it, then decided to combine it with the nice lined tutorial someone posted. My needle broke, I ran the zip part off the end of the zip and had to use a new zipper. It was turning out bigger than I thought, but ok a big make up bag is ok. Too deep and narrow opening. unpick, sew , unpick sew. Boxed corners wrong so it looked so stupid. For some reason I thought the zipper tabs were on the outside, so when mine were inside I unpicked and redid it. Now I see the end of the tutorial and how neat Jenny's are inside...( I did wonder why she did not turn under the ends of the tabs-) That will teach me to watch the tutorials several times all the way through before I start. As I already unpicked the tabs once the short zipper ends are fraying so I don't think I can redue them.
Annoying as I said to a friend yesterday 'Oh I'll make you a make up bag' and I choose her favourite fabric from my stash. The piecing and quilting took me time, and looks ok, and the neat edging along inside top is nice but not happy with it.
Needless to say this was a practice one, and it was only a small amount of fabric, at least I did do any major mistake on a huge quilt.
Thanks for reading my rant. SorryAttachment 99265
Re: What a waste of a 'day' sewing.
Just think of it as the rough copy, next one will be the fair! Homework terms from my schooldays if you think it's gobbledegook.
Re: What a waste of a 'day' sewing.
Ah, don't we all have days like that when it's better to have stayed in bed. Mind you, we do tend to learn far more by our mistakes and although this one has turned out ok, very ok in fact, your next one will be super.
Re: What a waste of a 'day' sewing.
I like to think that if I feel like I know more now than I did, the time wasn't really wasted. It might not have gone like I hoped... but at least that part of the learning bit is done with!
And hopefully *crosses fingers* every next time is a little smoother from here on. =^.^=
I think it looks dandy though!
Re: What a waste of a 'day' sewing.
Oh we do have days like that, all of us! That's when we learn. ;) Next time it will go a treat!
Re: What a waste of a 'day' sewing.
I have some practice pieces cut...Just a bit intimidated on starting ONE. I , too, have this Learning Curve Problem.. just not ready to unpick, sew, repeat. Gotta wait til I'm in the right frame of mind.
Re: What a waste of a 'day' sewing.
We all have episodes like that. The thing to remember is that everything we sew teaches us something to make the next thing we sew easier and better. I think it's a good idea to watch a tutorial more than once and make notes. It's really nice if you can have the tutorial playing next to your sewing machine. Good Luck to you. I still haven't made my first pouch yet so I really give you credit for jumping in and giving it a try.
Re: What a waste of a 'day' sewing.
Oh yes! We all have days like that!
I often think that if I didn't have my iPad set up with the tut next to my machine I'd go crazy.
I know I'm not going to remember it!!! So I may as well quilt /sew along with the instructions. Saves me a bit of time to do one first, the do multiples step by step. Yesterday I made 3 zipper pouches and 5 doggie poop bags as a group sew with directions on the iPad all along the way! And they just get better with practice! Just ordered another 50 zippers so I can make pouches for a fund raiser!!
Re: What a waste of a 'day' sewing.
Don't feel too bad, we've all had our days like that. I put binding on a quilt and had to redo all the corners as I folded them all wrong and they wouldn't fold over to the back. Rewatched the tute and it took me 4 tries to figure out what I was doing wrong!!! :icon_rolleyes:
With each new project we get to practice our new skills. Remember everything is easy === once you know how. LOL
Re: What a waste of a 'day' sewing.
There is something in the air today! I started sewing at 11pm, not am, that could've made a difference, lol! I sewed a strip the entire length of a table runner -- upside down. I spent more time staring at it wondering if I could live with it than I did ripping it off! I'm new to this, and I think I just learned that if I stare at a mistake more than a few seconds I better just go ahead and fix it.
I hope you're not ripping it out again, it really does look fine. Maybe you could tack down the fabric at the ends of the zipper and add some embellishment, then use and love the bag. I'm sure your next one will be a piece of cake!
Re: What a waste of a 'day' sewing.
As my hubby says: "A bad day fishing is better than a good day not fishing."
If you apply the same reasoning ... at least you spent time quilting!
Re: What a waste of a 'day' sewing.
Your sewing day sounded like mine - I posted this in another post yesterday:
Maybe today is just not meant for sewing. I'm working on another Big Star quilt. Well my ruler slipped and I cut into the fabric the first time....had to find new blocks and cut some new squares. My rotary cutter veered off on the second attempt....cut more squares. NOW....on the third try I have sewn the blocks together wrong.......this is just in the first block of the quilt. I have made this quilt before and didn't have any problems. So I think I'm going to call it day and do something other than sew. Hope tomorrow is a better day.
Re: What a waste of a 'day' sewing.
Everything I do in my dreams turns out perfect . . .
Re: What a waste of a 'day' sewing.
Thanks everyone. I will keep this one myself and make another slowly following ONE tutorial, with laptop on table next to me. My fancy handbag turned out great last week, it was the zipper that just had me get nervous and second guessing everything. Goodnight from Japan
Re: What a waste of a 'day' sewing.
I'm looking for the "Reset Button" on days like that! ;)
Still ended up with a cute bag - add some travel toiletries and it will make a great gift for a Women's Shelter.
Re: What a waste of a 'day' sewing.
Maria, we all suffer from days like yours! But.......at my age it's a big one (sorry couldn't help myself there), the great thing is, you learned from all the snafus and rashafrsahas! The next one will definitely go much smoother! I hadn't touched a zipper since th 70's and I kept my iPad verrrrry close on the first one. That went very smoothly, it was the pickin' and fussin' and one unkempt raw edge that wore me down! Your bag turned out great, even with the obstacles you encountered!
Re: What a waste of a 'day' sewing.
Been there, done that...NEXT!!!
Re: What a waste of a 'day' sewing.
Don't be so hard on yourself! It turned out great. But make yourself some notes while those boo boos are fresh in your mind.

Some sewing days have the "gremlins" present. Sometimes the first one is the one we learn the most from of what not to do. And there is always a first one. Aren't you glad it's behind you? Happy Sewing!
