a1angiem - Need your help
I finally started the Craftsy Machine Embroidered Quilt but already have run into a couple of issues. You were kind enough to answer my post last year when I inquired about the class. I have posted questions on the class but it seems Eileen may no longer be actively involved in answering.
My first issue I ran into was the Top Border piece. The Split Hour Glass block is bigger than the Hourglass one. How did you fix so the blocks would be even? I matched the bottom of each block but did you cut off the top of the Split Hourglass one so it would be even with the Hourglass block?
Next issue I have is trimming the Border where you do the double applique. Since we trim the other blocks using the feathers as a guide, how did you do the Border strip? I checked her video but can't find where she addresses how to trim that piece.
I am not putting the backing on as I do the pieces. I'll add a backing once the front is pieced together. I am using sashing strips for the front only.
Thank you for any advice you can provide. I think I have the rest of the blocks figured out but these 2 were the first hiccup I ran into.

Re: a1angiem - Need your help
Hi Julia! Well, wasn't I surprised as I scanned the 'New Posts' this morning and saw my name! haha!
Sorry to hear you are struggling a little bit with the quilt. It has been a couple of years since I completed that project so I had to pull it out to remember - the details are sketchy for me at the moment but I pulled up my blog post to try to jog my memory. You can read it here and see if there are any details that may help you and I will try to answer your questions as well:
Over the Kitchen Counter: Angie's Place for Cooking and Crafts: The Machine Embroidered Quilt Progress
1. I think when I joined the blocks I just set them out so they were even in the middles with each other and then trimmed afterward. So I would try to align the 'bulge' of the hourglass with the 'nipped waist' of the split hourglass (as far as I can tell from looking at my quilt. I wouldn't worry about the top & bottom alignment of either glass because you will trim off the excess. I wouldn't cut down any individual block until they are joined so you have some wiggle room.
2. If you mean the horizontal border, I think I simply tried to position the shapes evenly over the vertical columns, starting with the centre one. Mine are not perfectly symmetrically spread across the space, as Eileen's are, but visually, I think if the centre one is then the others don't distract if they are off a bit. I added crystals to the little space in between them, which I think looks nice to hide where they didn't quite meet. (You could add a decorative stitch, button, or some other embellishment if needed/wanted.)
My 'back' looks a mess as I didn't add any coverup to hide the embroidery jumps but no one can see that anyway as this is more a wall hanging than functional quilt. The struggles I had were just lining up the continuous embroidery but once I got some tools to help, it was easier. I'm sorry I can't remember too much else about it but I'm sure you will get it together in the end looking great.
I think the best advice is to give yourself wiggle room and don't trim anything until you are ready to join it together.
Thanks for the reminder of this class too. I bought Eileen's book and did another couple projects but haven't been back to do more since then. I think I'll pull it out and try something else! Good luck and keep us posted. Hope I helped just a little...

Re: a1angiem - Need your help
This helps a great deal. Goodness, I fretted over it too much. With the horizontal border, I didn't have too much of an issue with the process of continuous embroidery. i have hoops (Janome) that I can use the magnets to hold the fabric and batting together without having to hoop all of it and unhoop as I move to the next section. I hope this works as well on the vertical strips.
I am giving this to my daughter as she wanted a quilt for her couch so I am adding 2 extra rows and will add a second horizontal border on the bottom. I'm starting the vertical strips today. Wish me luck LOL.

Julia, it can be frustratingly vague, eh? I kind of thought it was a miracle I got it done but since you reminded me of the project, I actually pinned it up on the wall in my studio! It looks pretty darn good now to me! haha! Yours looks beautiful! Keep at it. I think it's a fun project and it got me using my embroidery machine for something different. When I look at the 'quilting' on it now I think it's pretty cool! Maybe you can just keep it for a wall hanging and whip out one of Jenny's quilts for a more functional one! Keep me posted and glad the blog helped out.
P.S. I love your colours!!!!!

Re: a1angiem - Need your help
I love the feather design she used but oddly, for some reason when it stitched, it kept stopping at certain points and then would finish. I thought my machine was possessed LOL. Then I figured out she must have added to the original design files. I will end up making it longer by adding a repeat of the top section and then make borders wider before binding. I figured I already spent enough to get this far so as the saying goes....keep calm and carry on. Next time....one of Jenny's

Oh wow! Oh my gosh, it turned out beautifully!!!!! And just how creative are you, missy!?!? To make a full size quilt from this is thinking outside the box and very impressive indeed! Looks amazing - great job!
