    Default Sewing Machine Thread Question

I recently ordered a new sewing machine and I'm not sure what size thread spools I can use on it. It comes with the small, medium, and large spool caps and has a vertical spool pin. The sewing machine is the Singer XL-580 Futura. I decided that if I was going to spend money on a machine I wanted something I could grow into and this is what I decided on! Singer is backed up and I haven't received the machine yet, but have started on cutting the fabrics for my quilt I was going to make. I was hoping to have everything that I needed before it got here so that I could start.

Does anyone know a general guideline that might help me?

    Thanks in advance!

I"d invest in a spool holder that can stand behind your machine. Then if you find some thread that you like that doesn't fit on the vertical pin you can still use it. I find I use the holder more than I do the pin on my machine. Good Luck.
One more thing I just thought of. Some sewing machines have an platform of spool holders that can attach to the top of the machine. I have a 10 spool one on my embroidery machine. You pop off the cover on the top and pop the platform in.

I agree ...I got one and find that I can use the larger spools and love it. My thread also doesn't get all screwed up

Same here, I use a holder for large spools (like serger threads) and the pin for smaller spools.

One thing I'd add - make sure you spend some time getting to know your new machine on some practice scraps before you start in on the big quilt project you're preparing for. Both for the sake of getting to know the machine and also for getting to know the pattern. Maybe one test block with extra fabric?

I have to agree with all the others...a spool holder is the way to go.....I just got one and love it....I use the spool pin on my machine now to hold thread to wind extra bobbins...my machine has an independent motor for winding bobbins
