Mine is the same way...when my Brother machine tells me I'm almost out of bobbin thread...I'd better change it. Mine only has about 3 inches left on it.
Re: my machine doesn't lie
I discovered the other day that my new machine does that and she wasn't kidding. I could only go about another inch.

Unfortunately, "Pearl" won't let me keep going once the notification pops up. I have to change the bobbin to continue :(
Jess,I can't remember, is Pearl a Viking?? Try pressing the foot pedal without starting and stopping - if I tap the pedal, it will keep stopping and giving me the message; if I just rev it and let her go, she will sew to the end of whatever I'm doing...
Re: my machine doesn't lie
There seem to be 2 types of bobbin thread sensors.
One tells you when you are basically OUT. Stop NOW, because you are done.
The other tells you when your bobbin is low. Find a place to stop soon, because you are about to run out.
I have 3 machines with sensors, and thankfully they all tell me when the bobbin is low. I have time to find a stopping point I am happy with.
One machine though, gets very cranky if I keep sewing. ;-) She will NOT let it go that the bobbin is seriously low on thread. The other 2 are a little more laid back, and trust that I will take their word for it that the bobbin is getting low.
