Not Liking My Quilt AT ALL!
What do you do when the quilt you are making is not going well? I am in the process of making a quilt for my stepmom and I picked out a pattern that I thought was really pretty and would look great with the batiks she likes so much but now that I am about 10 or so blocks in I hate it. Like really hate it! The pattern is the disappearing hourglass and I am having a tough time getting the blocks to work for me (probably because of all the bias edges). The bad thing is I have already sewn all of my layer cake blocks to the background to make the HST so there's no turning back. Any suggestions on how to move past my hate?

Can you starch and iron and starch and iron and starch and you get the picture? Will that help your blocks?

Ok, this is tough. Maybe try to remember it is not for you? You're using fabric she likes, a pattern that coordinates with the fabric, and they always seem " darkest before the dawn". When you get completely done, it will absolutely be better than now. Charge! Your only objective now is to finish it. Blocks a little off? So what, nobody's work is perfect. Just a little perspective might help you continue on, do the best you can, and remember you're making it for her because you wanted to give her something you made for her, and she will probably love it. Best wishes. Sharon

I agree with Sharon...forge on! Or...use the HST you have sewn together and make a different pattern from them.

And, sometimes our dislikes turn into Love-its!! If it is really giving you problems, put it aside for a while and do something fun and exciting and then pick it up again. We could all probably guarantee that by the time you have it finished that you will come to love it. One of my favorite (most favorite) sat in a wadded up heap for close to six years before I finally finished it!
Be warned. I am BORED.
This could be dangerous.
When you get cold just go stand in the corner.
They are usually 90 degrees.
A giraffe's coffee would be cold by the time it reached the bottom of his throat.
Ever think about that? No? You only think about yourself??

Keep going! I go thru all the stages when I make a quilt and in the end I like the results just fine. And of course you worry when it is for someone else. I think she will absolutely love it and you will be glad you persevered!

I normally put it down for a few hours and then go back to it . . what might look ugh in my eyes might be beauti-mist in someone else's eyes . .

I agree with the others-finish it. At one point or another, I have disliked almost all of my quilts. But one quilt . . . well, I hated it. Totally hated it. I asked the forum and everyone encouraged me to continue. And I did (hating almost every step). But, once I finished, took it out of the dryer, it wasn't too bad. I even hazard to admit, it was ok. I am glad I finished it.

Re: Not Liking My Quilt AT ALL!
I hear you BethEmilyB.
I have one of those - a disappearing hourglass. It was intended for my lovely DIL. I used a lovely Kaffe Fasset layer cake. Pehaps it was that the backgound fabric was a little too pale for my liking. Maybe it was that major attack of shingles I had while I struggled womanfully on. And no matter how carefully I cut and pieced, those baby hourglasses didn't work out to my satisfaction. It even made it to the LAQ before I realised I couldn't give Belinda a quilt that I did not feel good about. I grabbed it back just before it was to be quilted, and now it is waiting to be chucked.
If that happens to me again I will cut my losses and start again. I will use any future ugly ducking to make my cats a new cushion cover - before it gets too big.

Another one burned by Kaffe Fassett! That fabric is so beautiful but so hard to work with. BethEmily, if you post a picture someone might have a suggestion for quilt rescue! These forum people are full of good ideas.
