To make a block like Lorie's, you can stack four layers of different fabrics, and then use your rotary cutter & regular ruler to cut it at random -- three cuts, at random angles. Just be sure that none of the pieces are too narrow for seam allowances. Then sew together with one piece from each layer -- so for the first block, leftmost piece comes from the top fabric, next from the second fabric, next from the third fabric, rightmost from the fourth fabric. Since you cut them at the same time they will fit although you will need to square up the blocks. I saw a pattern like this in the 2014 June-July issue of Quilter's Companion, an Australian magazine, although they cut curves freehand, not using a ruler.
