    Question Question about dust?

I have went through and looked at many lovely sewing rooms on this forum. Thank you for posting such marvelous ideas of arrangements. How fortunate to have such large spaces. And the organization is key. I love how some of you shelved your fabrics with book cases or shelves. I have always kept my fabric in totes to keep the dust off of the cloth. How do you manage to keep dust off all that cloth? I know having/cutting/washing/using fabric creates a bunch of lint. What are your secrets? I am hoping one day to turn an unused bedroom into a sewing room. I am also hoping to get a quilting machine too. Right now I am cramped in one corner and have to go to the other room to cut fabric and to yet another to press fabric because my house is so cramped. I can only dream…..

I guess I never thought about it since it all gets washed once you are done anyway. I have never noticed it to be a problem.

I think a lot depends on where you live and if you have animals. It is so dry here that you can get little piles of sand/dust on your windowsills when the windows are closed. My fabric is store in a closed cabinet for that reason

To control dust build up in my house I use an Air Purifier with a HEPA filter, change the air filters in my furnace/air conditioner system regularly, dust with a micro fiber cloth, vacuum regularly with a vacuum with a HEPA bag and a HEPA filter, and due a very through spring cleaning.

I keep my fabric stash behind closed doors because that's the type of cabinets I liked the looks of that would fit in my space, which helps with the dust and the fading. I don't have much of a dust problem in the sewing room. I'm more concerned about fading than dust.

For the most part, my materials are stored in a bureau (two of them), others on boards on my bookshelves, scraps in bins. Vacuum regularly (Dyson), and dust every week, regardless. My batting is in those vacuum seal bags, the big honking ones. Those are under the bed. The roll I'm currently using is simply in a non-vacuumed bag under my cutting table. Those vacuum bags work great for really LARGE amounts of yardage as well. Those fabrics like my standard browns, blacks, creams, white, off white, red, blues. All get the same treatment. There is a LOT of useable space under your bed! Otherwise, I don't really worry about it that much, heck when the quilts done, it gets washed.

We live in the country and have pets so even my dust gets dusty. I keep my fabric in a cabinet and plastic carts.

Under my bed....ah. I have the bed raised a good six inches. That is where all the laundry baskets are full of sorted laundry. This is also where I take off my shoes and line them up.

    Shoot....no room there.

I need to plan on having a yard sale this spring....purge a gob of stuff. I have plenty of childrens clothing and baby/toddler items to get rid of. I guess I will wait and see after the sale.
