Re: Masculine fabric color advise?
I have a son who is a lot like that. Quilts-not so much. Mug rugs-he doesn't get it. But he loves the bowl cozy I made for him. Mind you, I had to explain it to him. So, my suggestion is a bowl cozy and include a pretty white bowl and directions.
I think batiks would be wonderful. I really like this color line: Hoffman Bali Pops Fabric Strip Bundle - River Rock - Beverlys.com

As far as a quilt goes, there are several options. We had a great teacher who left the district last year and someone made a t-shirt quilt out of school shirts. Do you know any hobbies or activities that he enjoys? There is this
https://www.missouriquiltco.com/shop...quarter-bundle that could be used as it is a neutral color palate or add in some yellow or other solid color. Possibly do a disappearing 9 patch.
Ohmygosh! Absolutely nailed it for color line!! This screams his name.
He is going to another district but all he kept saying to me last night, while trying so hard not to tear up even though I failed, was how his heart is here and how much he is going to miss "his" kids. Mine being one of them... and one of the only kids to hug him, cry, and tell him how much he is going to miss him. :icon_sniff:
I wanted to do something he would like color wise, then on the back side include a little drawing or something from my son outlined in our district colors, because here is where he started and has made a huge impact for the better.

Good point.

I recently made a baby quilt that had a lot of applique on it. I attached a hanging sleeve to the back and included an inexpensive rod with command strip hooks so the wall would not be damaged. I can't get over how strong those command strips hooks are. DH installed one on the back side of a bathroom door (which is wood and porous) several years ago and it is still there.
Awesome idea!
However with only one quilt to my credit, it's beyond my skill level....for now :icon_giggle:

Stonehenge..brilliant idea! Would suit this man perfectly, thank you.

Even better...I actually already have the Bali River Rock strip pack, a Tonga Rockport bundle, and Java Batiks.
Didn't even remember I had those until I saw your post.
Not sure I could make a bowl cozy though.....I only have one quilt, a sorry looking stocking, and two utility curtains to my credit.
I did go immediately looking for the Salt and Pepper from above in a charm pack though and unless I want to pay as much in shipping as the pack itself... :icon_confused: ...I can't get one. They are hard to find and the FQ bundle is too much fabric...
**thinks out loud..**
I'm thinking I could pull a few strips from the River Rock bundle to match the Salt & Pepper theme, then use Preeti's Paulitics block to make just a one or two block sized something....if that's ok Preeti??
Thank you for the idea guys...my brains is churning out the smoke at the moment because my gears are spinning so fast!
Re: Masculine fabric color advise?
Gray with maroon/burgundy is stunning and manly!

I like this idea to include a bowl! My dd doesn't get the mug rug thing either. Or table runners and placemats. lol
Re: Masculine fabric color advise?
my first thought would be black, red and white.

Re: Masculine fabric color advise?
So, using the Basically Patric line idea (Thank you Simply Quilting!) I pulled some similar colors, plus auditioned the River Rock line Vicky suggested and sorta came up with a combo of the two. I pulled the beige/tan at the last minute as it made the entire thing look to light.
After much piratese, seem ripping, and resewing lines...I came up with this for the top side (don't look too hard)
Attachment 95711
On the back side I did another finished "top" in the old school colors with a fun message from my son. This way it's serious on one side and whimsical on the other and our friend can choose whatever side he wishes to use. Kiddo gave it to him yesterday with many hugs and tears. **sniff sniff**
Anyway, thank you everyone for your suggestions. It was hugely helpful.
Preeti, thank you bunches for the encouragement, but in the end your block was too hard for me. I'm still getting straight lines down it would seem. :D
