    Default Another Face-to-Face: MeliSwan/Melissa - Cyber Elf :)

Ahhh to have a laptop again...how one becomes dependent on technology. Little oops with one of the grandpeeps dropping my old one off the sofa - then to make the decision to cut the cord from PC to Apple. Now we're getting things transferred.

What fun it was to meet the 3rd M* Forum Member/Cyber Elf in person! Turns out Melissa lives about 30+ minutes from me and she made a delivery of her 20 pillowcases and funds for 20 coloring books in person.

You would never have known that they were her first endeavor with French Seam Pillowcases, they came out beautiful. I was also touched to hear that her 14 year old son Christian wouldn't pick out the pillowcase print he really wanted because he wanted it to go to the children. What a true spirit of giving does he also show.

Before we knew several hours had passed, just talking away about our families, moves across states for jobs, sewing and life in Georgia. lol

We're going to meet up again in January and hit the sewing studio to do a self-binding blanket run-through plus work on some fleece hats that will be Cyber Elves' Easter Drive side project. Should be fun as we both like to laugh a lot and to think we didn't even have anything strong to drink!

Glad you got to meet in person! Meli those pillowcases are great. They are so addicting and when a Elf is making them they go even faster don't they? Really nice job to you both and I'm thinking you will continue to have fun every time you get together.

Ruby I'm just about 10 minutes from your Acworth location. I live in Kennesaw. If using a Serger do you still have to do the French Seams on the pillow cases? Please message me the details, this is something I can work on through the year and get them to you when you need them.

    Hi Lynne,

Great to hear that another M* member is so close to me. Heck all good shopping is in Kennesaw!

No you don't need to do a French Seam when you use a Serger, the only thing is that the hospitals require us to use 100% cotton thread on our pillowcases due to the commercial dryers they use. Poly can melt at high heat.

I purchase my 100% cotton sewing/serger thread 3000 yards for $3.95 at Thread Art

Heavy Duty Cotton Thread | Strong Cotton Thread | Large Cotton Thread

For my other projects I go to wawak.com - they carry 70+ colors of MaxiLock Serger thread, 5000 yards per spool at $1.99.

We'll be starting our Easter Drive in January - you can also join the Cyber Elves Give Back group here on M* and on FB (It's a closed group, so just as to join and I'll approve you. Invitation open to all M* Forum members.

I'll also PM this info to you just in case you don't come back to this thread.

Hmm, I wonder if we can gather a couple more locals and have our own little retreat.....

Well, there are 3 more FB Cyber Elves in the Atlanta area: Diana lives near Rome, Jenny lives in Woodstock and Sarah is some where near Alpharetta. They all know about M* but aren't on the Forum.

We could have a Cyber Star Retreat. LOL

Can I just pop in with a question on 'thread' - just today I realized that I will be needing more thread (black, navy, white and some assorted colors) and was going to ask for a suggestion on what is a good source at reasonable prices. All my thread fm life before quilting is polyester, so need a good supply of cotton. Is the 40 wt. fm Thread Art a good quilting thread or is that for sergers? Or is there another source you could recommend? Thank you and sorry for the interruption. "B"

    Hi B,

    No problem at all.

I use Connecting Threads, 50 Weight 100% Cotton thread for my quilting and sewing - my Brothers/Husqvarnas/Singers all love it.

Normal price is $2.79 for 1200 yard spool - I normally wait for their sale, $1.69 to $1.99 and stock up. They do have some colors and kits on sale now.

Got a ton of colors and I store them in all kinds of Apothecary jars - they look like giant Jelly Bellies. lol

    Thanks Ruby,
I think I did order some thread fm Connecting Threads back a few months ago when I decided to try quilting. I now realize you need much more than you think, so I'll have a look at the CT link and see if I can find a sale. I'm trying to compile a list of vendors for quilting supplies and trim it down to favorites, so thank you!

BTW, I love your thread display technique - like a piece of artwork!!
