Microwave bowl thingys - I want to cry!
I made one of the microwave bowl holders & it turned out really cute. So immediately thought this would be a cute present for my niece & her family (very small children). So I cut out some really cute coordinating cupcake fabric. I've done them assembly line style and have them down to the step where I sew together, turn & topstitch. After sitting there pinning 4 of these holders together, I looked at the thread I was using. Insert a howl & tears :icon_angry:. It's 37% cotton 63 % poly!!!!!!
Now what do I do? I have all of the X's & darts done in this thread. Do I scrap the whole project? What happens when this kind of thread is put in the microwave? Right now I'd like to put them in the fireplace. HELP!!

Re: Microwave bowl thingys - I want to cry!
Finish one and put it in the microwave with a bowl of water and see what happens... Then you'll know! Hope it goes well!

Re: Microwave bowl thingys - I want to cry!
I googled making them with poly thread & only found disasters for results. Fires, ruined a microwave, etc. Now I really want to cry even harder!

Re: Microwave bowl thingys - I want to cry!
I think microwaves should pass right through either poly or cotton. I think it is polar molecules, like H2O, that vibrate most from microwave radiation.

Re: Microwave bowl thingys - I want to cry!
Well, I was wrong if you Googled it and found fires! Sorry!

Re: Microwave bowl thingys - I want to cry!
Give them away as candy bowls :)

Re: Microwave bowl thingys - I want to cry!
Creative thinking Lorie! Anyone one want to play the best use game? What else can the microwave bowl holder be used for?

Re: Microwave bowl thingys - I want to cry!
Someone said to use to hold ice cream. That's pretty clever.

Re: Microwave bowl thingys - I want to cry!
I would advise against having these bowl holders in the kitchen if they are stitched with poly thread. Someone could use it in the microwave - I'm thinking a kid -- thinking it was safe and cause a dangerous situation. I'm for ripping them apart and resewing with cotton thread.

Guess I'll have to scrap the entire project! I used Warm & Natural batting, now I'm reading that's a no-no too. What a waste of time & materials! So disappointed.

You could turn them into water bottle holders. Add a circle to the bottom and add some straps .

Ice cream bowl cozies is an excellent idea! My hands always get so cold. However, you could wear them as hats too!

Re: Microwave bowl thingys - I want to cry!
I have no idea how to modify the stitching - but I got a thread catcher made from a bowl holder made with poly batting. Maybe someone can think of a way and you'll have some neat presents for your sewing friends........

Re: Microwave bowl thingys - I want to cry!
You could put potpourri in them to discourage kitchen usage.

Re: Microwave bowl thingys - I want to cry!
Good ideas for use. DH is liking the hat idea! Thanks my forum friends! I thought they could also be used as a jar candle holder. Or to hold make-up, etc in the bathroom. Off today to get thread & batting!

Re: Microwave bowl thingys - I want to cry!
They can still be used for tons of stuff! Honestly, I never would have imagined putting them in the microwave if weren't for these forums anyway!!

Re: Microwave bowl thingys - I want to cry!
Use them in your sewing room to hold feet, wonder clips, bobbins, etc!

Re: Microwave bowl thingys - I want to cry!
Some great ideas. Thanks. I did go shopping yesterday. I felt obligated to support Small Business Saturday! Bought 100% thread & 100% batting. I think she said it was a Quilter's Dream brand. I have tagged it as 100% cotton so I don't mix it up with other batting. I'll definitely finish the ones I have & use them throughout the house for various things. Now that I have the proper materials, I'll do real microwave bowl holders!

ONWARD BRAVE QUILTER. ! Seriously, I feel your frustration, but we ALL learned something here. Check and recheck when doing something new. The new holders will be wonderful!

Re: Microwave bowl thingys - I want to cry!
If you haven`t unpicked them yet. Make them, add a few ribbons and fill will some pretty containers of bath salts/cotton buds, little hand soaps for Christmas presents. ( Hope the print did not have veggies or fruit on it) If they go in the bathroom, no one would even think to use in kitchen.

Re: Microwave bowl thingys - I want to cry!
I did the same thing using warm and natural. So now they are just bowl holders on the table when the bowl is hot so it can be passed around easily! I ordered a microwave safe batting from Nancys notions to start over again. When I get it I'll post a pic!!

Re: Microwave bowl thingys - I want to cry!
No unpicking going to be done! I my least fav part of sewing when it's absolutely necessary. This is optional, so no way!! The fabric - it has cupcakes all over it!! So definitely a kitchen theme. Oh well, I learned a lot on this project. I'm just thankful that it crossed my mind to check the thread! Can you imagine how bad I would've felt to give them as a Christmas present, then have them catch fire!!

Re: Microwave bowl thingys - I want to cry!
Wait...I made a potato baker pouch and I used coats and clarks thread. I am sure it has some poly in it. Nothing bad happened...and I have used it a lot. If you quilted the bowl, it might have a lot more thread in it, but don't think it would be a problem.

Re: Microwave bowl thingys - I want to cry!
I made the potato bag also with warm and and natural before someone mentioned it wasnt actually all cotton. I had already used it twice without a problem. I must of got lucky too.
