How about the tote bag group? I have so much fabric from making kids clothes and not everything will go to together to make a nice quilt with out buying more fabric. So I joined to help them and me . lol Maybe some simple sewing will spark you back up.

Fabstripper... I have done similar to this before! Taken all the fabric off the shelf (bookcase) and re folded it and re organized it. I enjoyed it then..but don't want to look at it now! I have fat quarters in a drawer and did the same thing...and everything in color order etc. And I admit, sometimes I prefer cleaning up the mess and organizing it as much as sewing as I like that fresh, ready-to-start-again! My problem is I have to have a reason to make whatever I am making. I am to practical!!!

What about a local guild or quilting group that has an annual sale for local charities? Maybe you could sell some? Let the creative juices flow & keep on keeping on! JCY
JCY - My problem is I have to have a reason to make something. Where this came from, I dont' know! Another problem I have is I have heard from others that often, when you donate something like a quilt to a hospital or elsewhere...that it often doesn't go to the person in need...the work staff will swipe it and take it home! I am in a small town, don't have much here. I would love to sell them but tried on Etsy and even at my lower prices..not a sale. I tried a quilt guild group, but you have to pay a membership fee and monthly fees for this or that and participate in all the business parts of the guild, which I dont' want to do any of those! I have given to some people and didn't even get a Thank you! I"ll keep at it tho. HOlidays are depressing to me anyway so maybe that is my problem!

I guess my problem is... I need a reason or at least a theme to get going. If I just make a "boy theme" quilt...and have no one to give it to...my inspiration falters half way through!

Well, I did the tote bag circuit last summer. Jean purses/totes were where I started as I love those and they stay in style. I bought near new jeans at the thrift store and made the purse then decorated them, quite amazingly, I admit! On Etsy.. not a sale. I sent 2 to my sister as a surprise, she never even called me to say she got them much less t hankyou! (I had tracking on them!) So I texted her and just said.."been to the mail box lately?"... and then she said she got them, but forget to call me to thank me. I told her I sent two to our mom who has dementia and is in assisted living and my sister is the only one she "knows" and dtold her I sent them...and she didn't even text or anything to tell me mom liked them. I gave one to my 7y neice how LOVED it, but her mom was less than happy about having to "deal" with yet another purse! And the list goes on. I made some coloring book totes, where the tote holds the coloring book and I had slots for 10 crayons on the front. Again, no sales on Etsy or Recycler so I gave them to the church I used to go to (we moved to far away) and sent them to this one lady we still are in contact with along with 2 lap quilts for kids and some decorative pillow cases and she never called to say she got them (tracking again) and when we went down there 2 months later she said she gave all the totes to the gal that teaches sunday school for the kids and was going to suggest to her that each kid have one to bring every sunday...and would I be willing to make more if she gave me money for fabric. I told her I'd love to make as many as they want and I wouldn't take her money, it would be something I would want to do for the kids and the church. She said she'd give my phone number to the teacher...but that was 3 months ago and haven't heard a word!
Oh well... guess I could make myself something. I just have to find a good block pattern and maybe come Cyber Monday find some unique fabric on sale!

Regarding giving quilts to friends and relatives: I often think quilting is under-appreciated by those who have never tried it. Even with machine piecing, and precuts and rotary cutters and machine quilting, it is still a lot of work! Done as a labor of love for a relative--just don't know if they always care about it as much as we would like. Total strangers receiving one? Would a fleece throw from Wally World make them just as happy?
I hope you will prove me wrong here.
I know I sure look at quilts with a different frame of reference now, particularly hand pieced ones. Wow.

You can make quilts for future baby gifts, wedding and Senior centers. What about the Wounded Warriors programs. Just go crazy and make a varitiy they won't go to waste. You can even make them to raffle off at Church charities.

What about Quilts of Valor or Project Linus...that sort of thing? I make quilts for the local pregnancy center and Children's Advocacy Center. It's an ongoing project in our guild. I often make quilts that are "generic" and can be used by a boy or girl. I suspect some of those quilts may not be taken care of or appreciated by the child's parent(s) but if comforts that baby or child for even a short time, then it's all worth it. It's the giving to the child that brings me satisfaction.

Snip Snip... I don't know. I know many look at the prices of handmade quilts and say far to expensive for a blanket...but will go and spend nearly as much at the store for one! And I think "handmade" has been cast in past decades as being all but junk and if it was "handmade" must be junk. And.. this new generation.. I dont' think they have a clue about what "handmade" means or about the love and hope and dreams a handmade quilt can have. I named my blog Fabric and Memories...as I put memories in every quilt I make when made for someone I know. I want the memories to be there for them.. and add me to the mix so when they look at the quilt and think about the memories the quilt shows about them...they'll also include me in their memories as not just the maker, but the love I had/have for them. And I think the words "quilt" and "quilting" cast a dismal feeling of old age and old times to most current generations..they don't have a clue as to the part quilts have in history of family. And yeah, I woudn't be surprised if they were happier with a throw from Wally World!

I guess I just don't trust people sometimes as I have heard so many bad things...donating something to a specific cause or person and the item never gets to that cause or person...but slipped away by the "administration". Maybe I'll contact Bill O'Reilly and see about sending to Wounded Warriors. I think I can trust him!
