    Default Pockets vs hanging sleeve.

So I am making a quilt that will be about 73" square. I want to hang it up. I was assuming that I would need to make a hanging sleeve. I recently saw a youtube video where this professional quilter (Lori Holt) just folds 10" squares on the diagonal and sews them into the binding to make pockets. She then uses a dowel or piece of molding cut to size to insert in the pockets and hangs them that way.

What do you think? That sounds a lot easier then a hanging sleeve. Plus I understand that it is wise to have a way to hang quilts from both sides because of stretching or something like that.

    This is the video...

Wouldn't it sag in the middle? I think it sounds good, but a bigger quilt might need some support in the middle.

Good point! You could add little slings along the top and then slide the wood moulding through them. Or would that look weird?

good point Jean and cat. I wonder what Lori does? If I had to make slings then I might as well go and make a total sleeve. I will do more research.

    Has anyone done this maybe?

I've done that and also added a sleeve - the main issue I have is that different quilts need different lengths of dowel and you then get a storage issue. Here's another unobtrusive way to hang a quilt (same issue with size though).

    This could be dangerous.

When you get cold just go stand in the corner.
    They are usually 90 degrees.

Ever think about that? No? You only think about yourself??

I suppose I could always staple it to the wall like Jenny.

I think that most quilt shows require a sleeve, so if you intend to enter your quilt in a show, you might check the hanging requirements. Personally I like the sleeve, especially for larger quilts, because you get even support across the entire width of your quilt without a sag in the middle.

Ok - we all know I know almost nothing - but... I hang my wall hangings using expandable curtain rods from Target. I put them through the sleeve and use similarly colored and sized Command hooks to hold the ends of the curtain rods. Some of the rods have very nice ends on them and I think they look nice and so do my friends but we, none of us , know what's proper in quilting circles. They are easy to take down and they contract to take very little space and they're not too expensive.
