Not sure if it was suggested, but I just finished the "Won't you be my neighbor" quilt. It show cases large patterns well. Half of the layers cakes don't even get cut. The other half are used for the doors, windows, and roofs.

My favorite layer cake tutorial is one that involves chocolate cake, chocolate pudding and lots of whipped cream. Oh, you're talking about fabric, I would say my favorite is this one, don't know what the name is, (I stole it from someone here) but it's easy and doesn't chop up the pretty fabrics, similar to a double slice. I think the next one I do I'll leave out the sashing.
