Question, thread

Ok, so I was thinking, what thread do you use when your just sewing your blocks, seams, boarders together? All purpose dual thread from Joann's, that's what you would get the make an outfit, Halloween costume, pillows, etc. but when you sew your blocks, seams, boarders, do you use embroidery thread, quilters thread, or all purpose? I have like 250 colors of embroidery threads, is that just as sturdy as all purpose? I've been using a jumbo spool of quilters thread from Joann's, ( don't know brand) for just about everything. I hope this wasn't confusing, I never really asked.:icon_beuj: thanks for reading, just wanted some input.

I'm glad you asked this question... I need to know as well because I got a little confused when buying thread the other day.
I picked up big a spool of machine quilting thread and wouldn't you know, it didn't fit my machine's spool holder. Good thing I bought a little all purpose one in the same color

I use Aurifil thread, 50 weight for all my piecing and most sewing for that matter. For quilting I use either the 50 or 40 weight depending on the look I want to get. I use Aurifil brand simply because my BabyLock machine seems to like it, never had a problem with breaking threads or tensions since I started to use this.

I like Masterpiece best for piecing and use embroidery thread frequently for FMQ. I like the way the embroidery thread has a sheen.

I use Aurifill for piecing. If you look around, most professional quilters use just 2 colors- one for light quilts, one for dark. All the various colors come in with the actual piecing or applique. I recommend Aurifill 50/2 because it is so strong and thin. It really improved my seam accuracy.

I would love to use Aurifil for quilting, but I can't afford it. So I use Connecting Threads- 50/3. This thread is very strong, but linty. Make sure you clean out your bobbin and bobbin area after each sewing period. There are many colors to choose from and the price is very affordable.

I find Microtex needles work excellently with Aurifl, and topstitch needles are the best for quilting with CT thread.

You will love it. Just a FYI- you may have to recheck your 1/4" seams with this thread- it's that thin. And then remember to readjust should you use other thread for piecing.

I am currently using Aurofil 50/2 for piecing. I want to try the 50/3 cotton thread from Superior Threads next (can't remember the name). I think 50 wt thread is pretty standard for piecing. When quilting, you can use 50 wt, or the thicker threads at 40 and 30 wt. I am starting to use 60 wt bobbin thread along with my chosen quilting thread.

Another vote for Aurifil. Yes, it is expensive but it is very good quality and I get less breaks and lint with it than a lot of cheaper threads. A spool of it will last me a really long time too. I keep white, tan, and black around all the time and I have purchased other specialty colors for certain projects. Love that stuff.

One more Aurifill vote. I love it. I mostly use white, light tan or cream, and the grays for darker fabrics. But if I use a dark background like navy I might use navy thread if I have a small aurifill spool of it. I have purchased the small spool kits when on sale so I have numerous colors. Its fun to use them. I use Superior Polyester for quilting and Isacord for quilting. They both work great and ai look for sales.

I am an Aurifil fan too. It may seem expensive at first glance, but the spool has over 1400 yds of thread on it. For comparison, Coats & Clark Dual Duty has about 400 yds. If you figure out price per yard, the Coats & Clark is more expensive than Aurifil.

I just bought some Cairo Quilt thread from Bobbin Central. It's the same weight/composition as Aurifil and about 1/2 the price. I haven't tried it yet, but assuming I'm happy with it, it will save me a lot of money. :)

Aurifil thread is great. I just bought 5 spools on Hancock of Paducah it was on sale for about 9.72. I am not sure how long the sale is but maybe you can check it out. On Amazon it runs about $11 or 12 dollars.

I use a lot the connecting threads thread lately, but I LOVE magnifico from Superior Threads.

I like Aurifil 50wt., too... But have nine at the moment....... One of my two Chihuahuas chewed up the two spools I had, and I haven't replaced them.... They are a little pricey..... But..... At least one spol is in my plans for October..... I really want a light and a dark....

Right now, I am usng the big Coats and Clark spools... Nit my favorite, but JoAnn's had a sale....and I needed thread.

I get my thread on sale and have a variety. Generally, I use the same thread for piecing and for quilting (50 weight - 3 ply). I use neutrals for piecing and colors to match for quilting. Both cotton and polyester is acceptable in my book.

The only thread my machine does not like is Coats and Clark Dual Duty. So a lot has to do with how finicky the machine is.

One thing to remember, cotton threads are linty and require the bobbin area to be cleaned more often than polyester.

Check out the Superiorthreads website. There is tons of good info about threads and needles.

All cotton quilt gets all cotton thread too. Even if I do have to order it.

For piecing I use large cones of 100% cotton thread, 50 wt., eggshell color, 3,000 yds. at my LQS. Not sure of the brand. I pay $18.95 a cone. It lasts a long time. I've never tried Aurifil. For FMQ I use Signature 40 wt. in a large cone. Single color thread is $9.00. Or...I use Superior King Tut in the large cones. I ordered them through a friend who has a LAQ & had placed a large order, so the cones were ~$15. each. Reg. price is ~$25. JCY

My 1940 Singer HATES the dual purpose thread. I can't use it for anything. However, I use the cotton thread from Connecting Threads in all colors. I also have some older Star thread that I bought by the box, so use a lot of the white for general seaming and Linus Project quilts.
