just got a phone call
I just got a phone call from my friend who is the mother of the Dr in the palliative ward that I make all my quilts.
Kathy (the Dr) called her and told her she had just had a 4 year old little boy who was feeling very sad and depressed because he was sick and in the hospital. His mother doesn't get there during the day because she has to work, and the dad????????????.
Kathy told him she knew just what he needed and went and got him one of the quilts I made. He grabbed it, snuggled it , and asked her if it was his to keep forever with tears in his eyes. She told him yes, some nice lady made it just for you. He was so happy with his new quilt.
Kathy then went to her office and called her mom and told her to call me and tell me that story. I am sitting here with tears in my eyes as I write this. My heart is soaring. That is why I do what I do. and it doesn't hurt to hear a story now and then. I have been doing this for 3 years now and this is my first story, but I know there have been others.

yes, we will have to pick a date and time to meet up somewhere. I am retired and have lots of time for meetings, so I can work around your schedule. :)

That is such a wonderful story! We don't do it for the accolades, but when you find out how much the quilts mean to sick kids, you can't help but feel exceedingly happy! You know in your heart there are many more stories just like that, even though you don't hear them!

Re: just got a phone call
That is the sweetest story. And for someone like me, very motivating--I need to start donating quilts!
I should also tell you our own family story. My DD lost a baby in utero, and carried her for a week without going into labor. When they finally induced her, she and her husband got to spend two hours holding their little angel. Some sweet soul had donated a baby quilt. And my little granddaughter was wrapped in that quilt. It meant so much to my daughter that someone they didn't even know had gifted them with something so comforting.

that is what it is all about. I know there are lots of stories with the quilts I make, and maybe they are just stories that the families keep to themselves. just knowing the comfort a simple quilt can give is priceless.
Sorry about your DD's loss, and glad someone cared enough to donate that quilt.

What a wonderful story!! Your quilt made that little boy's day!! It's wonderful to hear how something that might seem simple or insignificant to some could mean so much to someone else!!
Once I get thru my Christmas gifts, I think I'm going to start making some to donate. My sister is a nurse and I'm sure she can find me somewhere in her hospital to donate them too.... Even if they're not children, but older patients who have extended stays. My grandma just spent 3 weeks in the hospital my sister works in and I'm sure she would have been floored of someone gave her a quilt to brighten her day. :-). Random acts of kindness are the BEST!

Re: just got a phone call
Oh my goodness what a beautiful story. The eyes are watering!! My mom is knitting some lap warmers for seniors near here. I'm with Rosie, after the holiday "orders" I'll be working on some too.
Too bad everyone's so far away!!

Re: just got a phone call
Wow, that was touching, my GD and her Mom, had volunteer a couple times making dinner for the families at the Ronald McDonald house here in Ft Myers, it went towards school credit. I think after The Holidays, I too will make a couple nappies, that's what we called our blankies. You know a couple of 36x36 flannel prints. humm, I'm thinking

I make most of mine from the self binding baby blanket pattern. I use fleece and flannel. They are very soft and cozy

You rock! It is wonderful to share talents!

Re: just got a phone call
As Sandy, Jean and others have said, this is why we do what we do. It is such a huge blessing to hear a story like yours, or to be able to hand deliver one to a sick or injured child. I can't imagine doing anything else with the little bit of talent that God gave me. Bless you Delores for doing what you do.

Re: just got a phone call
Isn't that what it is all about? You must have felt so go to hear that one of your quilts made all the difference for this little boy.I'm sure that they have for so many others that you don't hear about.

Re: just got a phone call
It is not why you are making the quilts but every once in awhile it is so nice and emotional to hear a Thank You.

Re: just got a phone call
What a touching story, Dolores. It's not why we do those things but it is nice to know when you've touched someone. I don't donate quilts...yet. Still working full time but someday I hope to be able to do that.

yes, I don't NEED validation that I am doing something good, I already know that. It just makes your heart sing a little louder when you hear how such a little thing can mean so much to someone.

Re: just got a phone call
Awwwwwww. I'm typing this through my tears. I have never sewed for charity, but after reading this, I will start. I have not given any of my quilts away and they are starting to pile up. Now I know what to do. Thank you for your story. :icon_wave:
