Clover Desk Needle Threader
I don't hand sew much, but I do sew my bindings by hand. Today I am binding and for some reason that darn thread just won't go into that little hole. It has nothing to do with my eyesight (nah, nope, never) but rather the thread is being mean. Then I remembered the Desk Threader. I bought this about 6 months ago and sort of misplaced it (anyone remember my husband and "cleaning up my sewing room" this summer while I was gone?) So, I took the time and found it. Out of the package and 2 seconds later . . , a threaded needle! It actually works. I LOVE it.
In the past, I bought a off brand threader. It didn't work, so I can only recommend the Clover brand.
A couple things to consider if you want to try this. It really only works with regular sized sewing needles with regular sized thread. It won't work with small, tiny needles, large embroidery thread or embroidery needles.

I have the Clover threader and LOVE it!

Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
I was wishing I had one the other day!!! Next time it's the DD I am buying it!

Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
I have one and keep it in my "binding kit". Thread, needles, Clover Needle Threader, binding clips and a small pair of scissors. I tried using the threader with perle cotton thread and the thread was just too thick.

Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
I had one and loved it for a few needles and then it stopped working.

Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
I have this too. Love it.

Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
I bought one from here on my very first order a few months ago and I absolutely LOVE it too!! I've got chubby, fat fingers and threading needles never topped the list of things I liked to do. This little wonder is amazing!

Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
what makes this different from the cheapie one you can buy at WalMart and other places
-
Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
I think I need one of those for sure!!

Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
The cheap ones at walmart etc are a different type--they have a loop of wire that you poke the thread through and then you have to push the wire loop thru the eye of the needle. So if you have trouble seeing the eye in the first place, this isn't going to help you very much. Plus I can tell you from experience those wires break so easy so you wind up buying a new one.
The Clover desk needle threader is completely different and easy to use, especially if your problem is not being able to get the thread thru the eye of the needle. It looks like a small scotch tape dispenser. You put the needle eye side down into a slot in the top, drape your thread across the notch next to the needle, then punch down on the lever. Pull out the needle and you will see a loop formed coming out of the eye, pull on that which makes your needle travel a few inches down from the edge and youre done. I have had 100% success even with small Roxanne quilting needles that have really small eyes.

Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
I've been meaning to treat myself for a couple of years, but still haven't....

Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
I use mine nearly everyday and I use a size 11needle very small and it works great. I was told when I got mine to always use an oval eye needle. I use either Clover or John James needles.
-
Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
I don't really enjoy the hand sewing but I couldn't do it at all without this clover threader. Like Jenny said," I know there's a hole there but..."
-
Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
Well I am going to have to bring mine with me, and let you show me. I can hardly ever get it to work. DGD (the 7 yr old) has better luck than me, lol.

I don't have one ,but now I know I am going to buy one. Thanks

Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
Auntieem, sometimes you have to put the threader on a hard surface like a table or wooden chair arm to work. It usually works even in my lap but once in awhile it doesn't catch and you have to press the lever a couple times. Are you sure you are putting the needle in eye-side down?
-
Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
I bought this and it didn't work at all for me. I was very disappointed :(
-
Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
Uhhhh, yeah I am putting it in eye down. I'm blonde, and don't see all that great anymore...but I think I got that part down.
-
Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
I got one and it never worked for me so I gave it to my GF.
I still use the needle threader with the little wire when I need it. But I've broken so many of them it's ridiculous!
-
Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
I found out about it not threading tiny needles the hard way.... I use size 12 betweens for everything... I just use those little metal threaders... The needle holes are so tiny, that I usually thread by feel.....
-
Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
Well, I don't need one right now, but I know I will in the future so thanks for the review and I think I am going to buy one now to have for later...then I won't have to figure which one to get...that works!

Bring it and we will see if we can get it to work.

Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
I LOVE my needle threader! I got one because the little wire threaders were too big for the needles I was using. This one works like a charm!
I take it to Project Linus meetings and everyone loves to use it.

Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
I bought one here and love it. I got tired of breaking the wires on the other kind when I was using a double thread for hand quilting.

Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
For those of you that don`t like the clover one I ordered this one. Waiting for it to come in this week so can`t give a review but heard they work better.

Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
When I looked this one up, it seems to me that it might work better than the clover, or maybe the video shows it better. I like the way it says to click on it a little to get the eye lined up. Plus you can use it for bigger needles and thread. This may be the desk threader to have. Let us know how it works.

Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
I must have the original needle threader (50 yrs or so? LOL) anyway the newer one looks a lot better. The old one I have is getting split (the plastic seam) from many uses. I still use the old fashioned wire ones in a pinch...it travels better and takes up less space when on the go. Am definitely going to see if I can find the Bohn as it looks like it will accommodate a larger variety of needles.
Thanks for the info...I always learn something new here.

Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
After reading some of the comments, I couldn't help but wonder: why is that for some people the needle threader works all the time and for others it's a bust. Mine was working great . . . until recently. What was different? The Needles. I grabbed a package of needles at the dreaded local fabric store (please someone open a decent quilt shop near me) and went home to start on a project that has a lot of hand sewing. I wanted to scream. It threaded the first needle and then . . . zip, nada, nothing. Then I got my old package of needles out. They were Clover gold eye #10. The threader worked the first time and every other time. Hmmmm, I think I see a pattern here. Clover threader works best with clover needles.
So, if you have a threader and it's not working, grab a package of clover needles. It is sure making this hand sewing project go so much faster and easier.

Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
Bernice the master hand sewist says they work only with needles with round eyes. She uses the tiniest size 11 needle to hand sew with, and she uses her Clover needle threader all the time.

Is 10 smaller than 11? I don't know much about needles, except they are sharp and tend to prick my fingers at times. :)

That should read oval eyed needles the round eyed needles just don't seem to work. I use either Clover or John James needles.

No 11 is smaller than the 10.

Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
I used to do a lot of counted cross stitch when I was in my 20's, and never had a problem threading the needles. I could just wrap the thread around the needle and then push it through the eye (it was usually a double or even triple ply of embroidery floss.) Now I'm 30 years older, and trying to thread that tiny thread into that tiny needle eye is so difficult. I use my reading glasses to poke the thread through the eye (sometimes I wet the needled eye end with my mouth!) and the thread has a better chance of going through. The doubled over thread trick never works on these tiny needles! I am thinking a needle threading device might be a good idea when I am hand stitching the binding.

Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
I have had that threader for quite awhile. I use number 11 needles for binding and the threader works great with Aurifil but does not work when using the same needle with Connecting threads in the small side of the threader. It must be the difference in thread diameter. It is hard to see, but the small needle holder has "silk" stamped in the plastic and the large needle holder has "cotton" stamped under it. Something to keep in mind if you have any problems. My case has started to come apart also. I haven't tried to glue it back yet since it still works as long as I remember to squeeze it together once in awhile.
I should have said I am talking about the Bohin threader.

Re: Clover Desk Needle Threader
I bought two and am very disappointed. I even asked MSQC which needles to use and ordered them. Grrr still doesn't work half the time. I have tried so many times that I broke the thread.
