only a newbie would do this
Ok so I was so proud of myself ......I finished quilting my baby quilt that I needed done by today and went to put the binding on.....I watched Jenny's tutorial using the binding tool and proceeded to get all my binding ready. I started sewing my binding in the middle of the top and when I got to the end (where your supposed to have six inches loose on both ends to use the tool) I cut the one piece with the tool and went to cut the other and realized I didn't leave any tail on the starting piece, I had just sewed it on at the start........Duh, so now I had a six inch shortage.
My solution was to make a label and sew the top end onto where the binding should have been, folded it to the back and hand sewed it........what a waste of time to finish this due to my birdbrain. I think it turned out all right but of course I know where it's screwed up, hopefully the recipient won't notice LOL
Re: only a newbie would do this
We are always our own worst critics. I am sure the recipient will love it and really appreciate all the work you put into it. When you present the gift just act as if that was the plan all along.
Re: only a newbie would do this
No one else will probably notice.
If I counted how many mistakes I make I would never quilt :)
Just think... you learned what not to do the next time, and chances are excellent that you will never forget!
Re: only a newbie would do this
I'm sorry you ran into that problem. It's an easy mistake to make. Many of us have been there and done that! Did you run out of binding fabric that you were not able to add on a strip?
Personally, I don't like the binding tool. I've made more mistakes with it than I care to count. It's useless to me. I don't want to have to watch a video every time I use it! I know it won't help right now, but keep these videos in mind for next time. There are quite a few easy methods of joining the binding with no tools and little measuring.

It's just when we are feeling like quilting rock stars that something goes wrong! Glad you found a creative solution to the problem.

I've been using the first method on the last few quilts I've made and love it! It's perfect every time.
I watched the video for the second method...twice....and I love how it comes out perfect, but I'm confused at how it works with no measuring.... :icon_beuj:

The second video shows the notch method, which I like. The first video shows a little measuring. I should have edited my comment that I use a piece of the binding instead of measuring with a ruler.
I didn't know how to explain it well here, but I'll try. I cut off an excess piece of my binding. Open it up and place it underneath my two overlapped strips. The crease of the piece runs vertically, so the width is exactly the same as my binding.
I take the left long strip and lay it over the little piece and cut at the right side edge. Then, the right long strip laid on top of the piece and cut at the left edge. So now, each strip measures the length needed plus the width of my binding. All that's left to do is sew the two pieces together diagonally.
Re: only a newbie would do this
method I use very similar to the second notch method listed. I like this method for no measuring

Don't stress over it..... I really can't use the binding tool.... I screw it up every time....
Watch Jenny's titorisl.... The Ultimate Binding Tutorial.... This method WORKS. You'll love it....
The binding tool makes a great template for a braided quilt.... But that's it....at least for me...
BTW,,, your solution was clever..... Just let the recipient believe thst' show you planned it..... We all do that.... You just have to forbid yourself not to point out your mistakes......
Re: only a newbie would do this
I keep hoping to one day to have a finished quilt WITHOUT any errors. :)
Re: only a newbie would do this
Yes, the Ultimate Binding tute by Jenny is what I use as well. I just overlap the 2 1/2 inches (or however wide your binding is before folding it) and join it together - lays flat every time :)
Re: only a newbie would do this
I have also done this. I unsewed the beginning strip enough to work with and added more binding. Sometimes I have even joined the strips without the angle cut just a straight cut/seam. Whatever works.
I have found that If I get to congratulating myself too soon, Murphy's law goes into affect. Like with my oldest son's asian quilt. It turned out to be a nightmare to quilt. I totally felt like I had ruined the quilt with my quilting. It shifted like crazy. Washing a quilt afterwards really helps disguise errors!
Re: only a newbie would do this
No wrong way to correct errors. Good thing is if the person quilts or not they will think you did this on purpose. Thinking outside the box, LOL

I too, use the first method, but the second one looks very interesting and I think I'll give it a try! Thanks for sharing.
What a wonderful and creative way to fix your oopsie!
Re: only a newbie would do this
You're not a 'newbie'... you're a "Genius"!!! How clever... Bet it looks great, and what a fantastic coverup! I always say there are no mistakes - just opportunities to show your creative artistic skills! We're artists, and if anything goes 'awry', it's just another opportunity! And besides... as one of my students told me when she was making 'mistakes', "oh well, it's Amish!" I had to ask what she meant, and she said the Amish have a saying (and must make sure they have at least one mistake in each of their quilts) that "only God is perfect"... so their quilts MUST reflect at least one mistake! I kinda' liked that reasoning... :D
Re: only a newbie would do this
I don't think I would have come up with such a clever solution! I would have been "ripping" and saying bad words! I too use the overlap the width of binding technique with consistent success....
