Need Comments / Singer Futura Quintet
Hello All! I'm new to the blog, and excited to join! I am replacing my 25 year old Kenmore sewing machine and thought that I had my plan all in order. Then, my best friend tells me that she bought a Singer from HSN in the $850 price range that she loves. After looking at their site, I found the Singer Futura Quintet, around $1100 and requires an external laptop. My question after searching blogs/sites for hours, does anyone have experience with this machine? It's a 5-in-1 that does embroidery. While I had not intended to shop for an embroidery machine, I can see the advantages.
Is this machine a good machine that will last many years (as many as my old Kenmore)?
Would it be best to invest in a higher-end machine?
I have two quilts to finish and my Kenmore is not sewing well these days. Wednesday is the day that I need to make the decision.
All comments / positive and negative on the Singer Futura Quintet are welcome!
Many Thanks!
Ali
Re: Need Comments / Singer Futura Quintet
I learned how to sew on a Singer and always stayed with Singer machines. The last one hubby bought for me was the Futura Quartro. I like the machine and it is good for sewing but I'm not happy with the embroidery. I have 3 singer machines and this last one is just not made well. I have been getting error lights and there is nothing wrong. I'm a little disappointed with it overall. For the money I spent on it, I wish I had known about Janomes when I bought this machine. I am looking into buying a Janome in the next year or so when finances will allow me to.
If you are not really interested in the embroidery, I would suggest that you look at the Janome machines. For the money that you are willing to spend on a Singer, I think you could get a Janome that you will be very happy with and it will last much longer...They are very well made machines.
Re: Need Comments / Singer Futura Quintet
I have a Singer Quantum CXL for probably 30 years that's a real work horse and still runs great. However with that said my friend who is a sewing machine repair person said Singer machines are not what they used to be and have a lot of plastic housing now. I also have a Janome 7700 and I am very impressed with that machine. Very well made, user friendly. Probably more machine than I need but got an excellent price on it. Has a very large area for FMQ if you do that.
Re: Need Comments / Singer Futura Quintet
Ali, I would go to HSN and check the reviews on this machine and maybe that will help you decide.
Re: Need Comments / Singer Futura Quintet
I have had the Quartet for almost three years now and have had no problems with it. However, I have never used the embroidery feature of it so I can't help you there. Oh, and I also bought it on HSN on it's premier showing.

Hi Ali,
Welcome to the forum!
I have no advice for your next purchase, but I will give you some advice that was given to me when I was replacing my 25+ year old Kenmore. KEEP that workhorse as your backup machine. Yep, that is a good machine and while it isn't feeling well at the moment, when you have the extra funds, take it in for a check up. I am so glad I did. It will sew through anything and I know it so well. And it is the machine that I will look inside and play with it. I have learned a lot about the inner working of sewing machines because I am not afraid of breaking it -after all, I have my regular machine, if I kill my Kenmore, no biggie.
Re: Need Comments / Singer Futura Quintet
Thanks, Genny! You would not believe how many sites I have been on and machines that I've reviewed. I'm hoping that someone actually has a Singer Quintet and can provide a response on this machine. Maybe it's a newer machine and that's why I'm not finding any information to speak of (positive or negative) on this machine.

Hi Vicky, that is great advice! I am planning to keep the machine, we've been through a lot together! What machine do you use??
Re: Need Comments / Singer Futura Quintet
Hi Bubba, do you know if the Quintet is a newer Quartet? Do you use this machine for quilt piecing and machine quilting as well? hanks!
Re: Need Comments / Singer Futura Quintet
I have the Kenmore SENSOR SEW 70. It was the first "big" purchase I made. My husband and I had been married for a couple years and the excuse we (umm . . . I) made for such an expensive machine and cabinet (yes, it was really expensive for us at the time) was that I could hem my husband's pants and save money. One day, I will have to figure out if we ever broke even. But I sure made a lot of kid's clothes and costumes, curtains and decorations with that machine!

I don't know. Mine does sewing, serging, embroidery and as I said I never used it for the embroidery, but I do FMQ on it.

I don't know any thing about this machine, but Woot.com has it today only for $599 and their shipping is $5 for anything always. I have ordered from them and my DS orders all the time. Woot
Re: Need Comments / Singer Futura Quintet
I recommend if you have a dealer near you,,, go with that... just MHO... as far as the brand.. in the lower price range.. I think the Brother has the best performance record,,,, the Singer had wonderful reviews back in the day, but to be honest,, I've not seen a lot of positive lately,,, I could be way off base,,, but Janome,,,Brother have been work horses from what I've seen and I have both, as well,, Hus. is not what it used to be,, I agree,, if the cost is not prohibitive to repair your old Kenmore... so be it,, but you just can't beat the old machines for basic stuff!!!
