Who encouraged me to take a spare bedroom as a sewing room?
If you did, please come and help me! My old sewing room (small as a walk-in closet) is a mess of pins and errant pieces of thread, the kitchen is full of fabric waiting for a spot in the new sewing room and my new sewing room is a jumble of fabric, patterns, batting, fabric, books, kits, notions and yes, even more fabric! What a mess! It will take me weeks to get it sorted out. But I love it, even the way it is now. Thank you for your encouragement to take the plunge!

Re: Who encouraged me to take a spare bedroom as a sewing room?
Congrats on moving to a bigger space! It is true, that moving into a bigger/different space can be a little crazy for awhile, but you will be happy when it is all set up. I have a spare room as my sewing room and I found that it took a few times of rearranging before I got it to where I really love it. It's not totally done yet...still have some fabrics to sort and odds and ends to finish, but now that the biggest cleanup is complete, I work on the other things a little at a time. It's all falling into place and it will for you too!
Good Luck and show us some pics when it's ready.

I use a spare bedroom sewing room having moved it from the attic, I now have an over-flowing bedroom and a still over-flowing attic, oops!

Re: Who encouraged me to take a spare bedroom as a sewing room?
Should have said something last week when DH and I were in the area-or close to it. DH is great at organizing and arranging things in a useful and convenient way.

Re: Who encouraged me to take a spare bedroom as a sewing room?
Sounds like you are having fun.....even if it is a big mess right now....
I've decided to redo my quilting room..... That means dismantling everything, getting it ALL out..... Then painting, and trying to make it a better, more useful and attractive space.... My dear husband designed this room for me fourteen years ago.....in another house. I liked it so well, that he just redid it in the new house.... I still love it, but feel the need for a change....
Not looking forward to the mess....

Re: Who encouraged me to take a spare bedroom as a sewing room?
After having my Li'l Sis here last weekend, pulling things out of closets and opening storage bins, I can happily say that I am so glad she did that - I've totally rearranged my sewing room (just finished the MAJOR sorting this morning) and am now functional again - or as functional as I can be without my main machine. It's a GOOD feeling.

Re: Who encouraged me to take a spare bedroom as a sewing room?
Lol Cydni, feel your "Holy Cow am I ever gonna see daylight!" again. It seems insurmountable now, but just wait til you get it done, you will be so tickled and then wonder why you didn't do it sooner! Did the same to my "guest bedroom", as we don't have that many overnight guests. Only it was for an office and music room. NOW, however, I've had to make it an offfice/music/sewing room. Totally different take and the process is going to take some time. Press on (pun intended) and pics please!

Re: Who encouraged me to take a spare bedroom as a sewing room?
I'd suggest...first...table your machine. However you want, but do it first. Then get book shelves or however you are going to store your fabric. Get that in there...empty. Then put your fabrics in, not even in order..just get them in there. Once that is done, you'll see what space you have left to work with. But...then..organize your fabrics on the shelf. Organize what you need at arms length at your sewing machine... then go from there. I have found that getting just the main things done first...helps get the rest done. Like my mom always said...make the bed first...it will automatically make the room LOOK less messy and you won't feel as overwhelmed in cleaning it up!

If I was close, I'd come and help. It always gets worse before it gets better! I'm glad you're enjoying the process.

Re: Who encouraged me to take a spare bedroom as a sewing room?
One thing I did, Cyndi, was to RID MYSELF of everything that I KNEW I would never use in a quilt . . . I, luckily, have a wonderful cause which will make me and them feel well about my donations.

Good for you! It will be wonderful when it is all done. A whole room for yourself and your "stuff". I AM ENVIOUS, but Happy for you!

I just did this, too. It was hard work but it makes me feel so good to have it in that special room. Good for you.

She called me " drill Sargent " when we were done but she loved it!!

Re: Who encouraged me to take a spare bedroom as a sewing room?
Oh my goodness! I could not wait to get up and play in my new sewing room! My last tiny room only had good light in the afternoon (I love natural light) and this new room juts out from the house and has windows on THREE SIDES, so I'll have light from early morning til the sun goes down.
I still have three big boxes of stuff to organize and put away, but today I am going to do some PLAYING in there! The boxes can wait, I need to create!

Re: Who encouraged me to take a spare bedroom as a sewing room?
I took my spare room and made it a sewing room. It would be the only room in the house with wall to wall carpet...uggh:icon_umpf:. However that has changed and wow what a difference. Hubby put in vinyl tile that looks like hardwood. So easy to maintain. The only hiccup was when I have to turn the room back into a guest room for overflow company. Each time I seem to lose stuff! Also ever time I start a new project it becomes a disorganized mess....oh well tis the live of a quilter...well for me anyhow!

Re: Who encouraged me to take a spare bedroom as a sewing room?
Way to go, Cyndi! There's no turning back now, and after you've been using that room for a while you'll know I'm right.

Re: Who encouraged me to take a spare bedroom as a sewing room?
I now have a much larger, sunnier and beautiful new sewing room in my son's old bedroom! Sandy Navas sent me a great book on organizing "Dream Sewing Spaces" for large and small rooms. I am getting so many ideas from this book! Thank you, Sandy!
I'm at the point now of trying to find room for those odds and ends that I used to have stuck here and there - patterns I might someday want to use, old notebooks with maybe one or two ideas in them that I want to keep, knitting items that I will probably never use, etc, but I want to keep this room organized so I don't want to stick them all over the room. I'm keeping my thinking cap on while I continue to set things up.
Yesterday DH and I went out to buy some lightweight insulation to make a small portable design wall. Martha of quilter.martha fame here on the forum gave me the idea. She has hers on the wall, as most people do, but I mostly work on small wallhangings and do not need to take up a whole wall. I'm lining it with flannel tonight with the help of DH so it will be good to go tomorrow! I have four wallhangings bumping around in my head, so watch out world! Here comes one motivated chickadee!

Re: Who encouraged me to take a spare bedroom as a sewing room?
Oh, Cindi, your room sounds wonderful. I went from a small space in laundry area (8 x 10) to a spare room when DH made me a quilt frame too large to fit there (frame is 10 feet long !!). When the basement flooded last winter and was refinished, I moved there. DH set it up as a man-cave, but didn't use it that much. He was a big help setting me up with my first design wall and lots of shelving. My only drawback is the drop ceiling lighting. I could use more, so this weekend I went to Joann' s with coupons and got an Ott Lite. Love it already.
Enjoy your space. I now have enough room if anyone wants to join me here. :icon_wave:
